by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
Traeh Haynes (Schertz, Texas/North Central College) has been selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on February 22.
Haynes won the 191-pound weight class in the NCWWC Regional IV Championships, held in Naperville, Ill. on February 19. She was one of four champions for North Central, which won a loaded regional tournament, qualifying all 15 athletes for the NCWWC Nationals in March.
Seeded second, Haynes opened with a 10-0 technical fall over Melissa Jacobs of Augsburg in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, she beat No. 3 seed and teammate Brittyn Corbishley, 13-4. In the championship finals, Haynes defeated three-time NCWWC champion and top seed Sydnee Kimber of McKendree, when Kimber was hit with her third caution and disqualified.
Haynes is a sophomore with North Central. Haynes was a two-time Texas 6A state champion at 215 pounds (2021, 2021) for Steele High School, and also placed second in the 2019 Texas states and third in the 2018 Texas states.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level.
