David Carr (Canton, Ohio/Iowa State) has been selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on February 16.

In the most anticipated matches of the college season, No. 2 ranked David Carr of Iowa State, a 2021 NCAA champion, defeated No. 1 ranked Keegan O’Toole of Missouri, a 2022 NCAA champion in the 165-pound match during the Big 12 dual meet between Iowa State and Missouri on February 15 in Columbia, Mo.

It was the final match of the dual meet between No. 3 ranked Iowa State and No. 10 ranked Missouri. Carr scored two takedowns in the match, and rode O’Toole for the entire third period to earn a riding time point in his 7-4 victory. Carr extended his record to 20-0, while O’Toole’s fell to 12-1.

In two dual meets over the previous weekend, Carr scored a 20-6 major decision over Austin Yant of UNI on Feb. 10 and a 16-2 major decision over Anthony Federico of Illinois on Feb. 12.

In addition to his 2021 NCAA title, Carr was third in the 2022 NCAA Championships. He was named NWCA First Team All-American in 2020, the year the NCAA Championships were cancelled. Carr is also a talented freestyle wrestler. He is a member of the 2022-23 Senior National Team, after placing third on the ladder at 74 kg. In 2019, he was a Junior World champion (now called U20 age group). In 2016, he won a Cadet World bronze medal (now called U17).

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level.
