Yelena Makoyed (Orangevale, Calif./Cardinal WC/TMWC) has been named the USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on June 27, 2022.

Makoyed won a gold medal at 76 kg at the Matteo Pellicone Ranking Event in Rome, Italy, June 22-23.

Makoyed won five matches on the way to the title. She opened with a 10-2 win over Martina Kuenz of Austria. In her second match, she edged 2021 World silver medalist and Olympian Epp Mae of Estonia.

Her next two matches ended by pin, as she put away Francy Raedelt of Germany in 3:52 and Cataline Axente of Romania in 2:01.

In the championship finals, she dominated 2021 U23 World champion and 2018 Junior World bronze medalist Anastasiya Alpyeyeva of Ukraine in a 10-0 technical fall.

Makoyed was second in 2022 Final X, to hold the No. 2 spot on the Senior Women’s National Team. She is a two-time NCWWC college national champion for North Central College.

Each week, USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level.
