Katie Gomez (Van Nuys, Calif.) has been selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on Sept. 21, 2021.
Gomez, ranked No. 1 in the country at 117 pounds, competed in the Main Event of FloWrestling’s Who’s Number One all-girls card last weekend. In the night’s finale, Gomez faced Washington’s Shelby Moore, the No. 1 athlete at 122 pounds. It was the only No. 1 vs. No. 1 matchup.
In a high-scoring event which went to the very end, Gomez, a 2021 Cadet World champion, edged out Moore, 11-10, on the strength of an early four-point move and some clutch counter offense. Gomez led for most of the match and extended her lead to 11-6, but Moore hit a four-point headlock on the final buzzer to close it just a one-point margin. Ultimately, Gomez emerged with the win for a monumental win over a fellow No. 1 ranked athlete.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Manager of Communications and Social Media Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
