Adriana Gomez wins bronze medal at Beach World Series Katerini in Greece

KATERINI, Greece – Adriana Gomez finished off a strong week of wrestling by claiming a bronze medal at 50 kg in women’s Beach wrestling at the 2025 Beach World Series Katerini on Sunday. Gomez was competing in her first Senior Beach World Series event.

Gomez defeated past Beach World champion Stefania Ivascu Priceputu of Romania, 1-0, in the bronze-medal match. Gomez emerged from a hard-fought battle, after forcing Ivascu to touch her knee during a scramble position midway through the match. She kept great position late in the bout as Ivascu tried to make a comeback.

Gomez was edged in the semifinals by Aikaterini Vekri of Greece, 3-2. Gomez scored the first two points of the match on effective techniques, but Vekri was able to rebound with three one-point scoring moves to secure the win.

It was an amazing performance over three days of wrestling for Gomez, who also captured a bronze medal at 50 kg at the U20 Beach World Championships on Friday. Gomez finished the two tournaments by winning eight of her 10 matches, including six matches where she did not allow a single point to be scored upon her. Gomez is a redshirt sophomore at Colorado Mesa, where she was a 2023 NCWWC qualifier as a freshman.

Gomez was the only U.S. athlete competing on Sunday. Tournament officials decided to run an additional round of Group matches on Saturday afternoon, due to a strong forecast of rain on Sunday morning. The strategy worked, as it rained for much of the morning and early afternoon, but the rain held off during the Beach competition Sunday in the late afternoon.

The U.S. women finished third in the unofficial team standings with 44 points, behind only champion Ukraine with 90 points and host Greece with 53 points. Team USA scored team points in every weight class, from Gomez, plus Kennedie Snow (5^th at 60 kg), Maura White (5^th at 70 kg) and Erin Kremer (6^th at Over 70 kg).

The U.S. men finished eighth in the unofficial team standings with 14 points. Iran won the team title, sweeping all four gold medals and scoring a perfect 100 points. Georgia was second with 57 points and Ukraine in third with 55 points. Scoring team points for the USA men were Kyle Ferriter (8^th at Over 90 kg), Francis Morrissey (9^th at 80 kg) and Jacob Bumgardner (9^th at 90 kg).

Beach World Series Katerini was the fourth stop of the five-event 2025 Beach World Series. Closing out the year will be the 2025 Beach World Series Final in Alexandria, Egypt, October 18-19. The USA will enter a talented team of men and women in the final event.
