by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
POREC, Croatia – Eliana Bommarito won her U.S. record eight career Beach World Series medal after claiming a bronze medal in the women’s Over 70 kg at the Beach World Series Porec on Sunday. This is the second stop of the five-event United World Wrestling Beach World Series for 2025.
Bommarito was 1-1 in Group A on Friday, losing by pin in her first match to Liudmyla Pavlovets Tychyna of Ukraine, scoring a 4-1 win over Stefania Zacheila of Greece. Bommarito did not wrestle Saturday morning, and when Zacheila beat Pavlovets Tychyna, 3-0 on Saturday morning, all three women had 1-1 records. Based upon tie-breakers Pavlovets won the Group, with Bommarito second and Zacheila third. The top two in each of the two Groups advanced to the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Bommarito was defeated by Iryna Pasichnyk of Ukraine, 3-0. In her bronze-medal bout, Bommarito rebounded with a 3-0 win over Aikaterini Pitsiava of Greece to secure another medal.
Of her eight career Beach World medals, Bommarito has won six golds and two bronzes. Bommarito was a Beach World champion in both 2023 and 2024, scoring the most total points from the entire Beach World Series in her weight class both years. No other American has ever won a Beach World title.
Two U.S. wrestlers qualified for bronze-medal matches and were defeated, placing fourth in their weight, Rodrick Love of Illinois in men’s 80 kg and Kyle Ferriter of Colorado at men’s Over 90 kg.
Love won both of his Friday matches by fall. In his final Group B match on Saturday morning, Love was pinned by Vusal Aliyev of Azerbaijan. Aliyev placed first in Group B, with Love in second. There were three Groups at 80 kg, and Love scored eight classification points, the most of any Group runner-up, qualifying him for the final spot in the semifinals.
Saturday morning, Love lost his semifinals bout to Ali Mohammad Gholami of Iran, putting him in a bronze-medal match, a rematch with Aliyev who also lost in the semifinals. Aliyev pinned Love in the bronze-medal match.
This was Love’s best performance at a Beach World Series event. He placed seventh at 80 kg at Beach World Series Monterrey in Mexico earlier this month. Love also placed 10th in his weight class in the final standings at 80 kg in the 2024 Beach World Series.
Ferriter went 1-1 on Friday, then earned a spot in the semifinals with a clutch 3-0 win over Nicolae Stratulat of Moldova on Saturday morning, placing second in Group B. In Sunday’s semifinals, Ferriter lost to Group A champion Mamuka Kordzaia of Georgia, 3-0. In his bronze-medal bout, Ferriter fell to Vazha Daiauri of Ukraine, 3-0.
Ferriter was also fourth in the first Beach World Series event of the year in Monterrey, Mexico earlier this month. Ferriter won a 2024 Beach World Series bronze medal, after placing third in points scored in the Beach World Series standings. He also won a bronze medal at the Beach World Series Saint Laurent du Var in France in 2024.
Two U.S. wrestlers were defeated in their final Group match on Saturday morning and did not qualify for the semifinals, Justin Benjamin of Illinois at 70 kg on the men’s side and Sadie Evans of Washington at 70 kg on the women’s side. Both had one victory this weekend. Evans finished sixth in her weight class, with Benjamin placing seventh.
The next Beach World Series event will be held in Casablanca, Morocco, September 6-7. The final two Beach World Series stops are in Katerini, Greece (Sept. 27-28) and in Alexandria, Egypt (October 18-19).
