Benjamin, Ferriter, Bommarito unbeaten after day one of Beach World Series Monterrey in Mexico
by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
MONTERREY, Mexico – Three U.S. Beach wrestling stars are unbeaten, with 2-0 records in their Group competition, after day one of the Beach World Series Monterrey on Monday afternoon. The competition, held at Canchas Voleibol Playa CARE, is the first of the five UWW Beach World Series events for 2025.
The three with unbeaten records are two-time Beach World champion Eliana Bommarito of Michigan (Women Over 70 kg), 2024 Beach World bronze medalist Kyle Ferriter of Colorado (Men Over 90 kg) and Justin Benjamin of Illinois (Men 70 kg), a gold medalist at 2024 Beach World Series Acapulco in Mexico.
Bommarito won Group A with two victories, quickly pinning Pauliana Bernal Vences of Mexico in 14 seconds, and scoring a 3-0 victory over Luz Maria Hernandez Hernandez of Mexico. Bommarito has clinched a spot in Tuesday’s semifinals, but her opponent will be determined on Tuesday morning.
Ferriter did not allow a point in his two Group B matches, stopping Ulises Sanchez Robles of Mexico and beating Rizieri Chavez Ledesma of Mexico, 3-0. If Ferriter wins his final Group B match Tuesday against Paul Morales Bojorquez of Mexico, he guarantees a spot in the semifinals.
Three other U.S. wrestlers competed on Monday, also having two matches in their Group competition.
At 70 kg, Americans Ruben Calderon of Texas and Bryan Coll of New York faced each other, with Calderon earning a tight 3-2 win. Calderon finished with a 1-1 record, and Coll is 0-2 after day one. Both will have one more match in Group B, and could have a chance to advance based upon the results.
Rodrick Love of Illinois lost both of his Group B matches at 80 kg and will compete again on Tuesday morning to complete his Group matches.
Tuesday’s completion of Group competition begins at 10:00 a.m. MT. The final session, which includes the semifinals and medal match finals in each weight class, begins at 3:00 p.m. MT.
