Healey, Turner, and Poalillo advance to women’s freestyle semis; Calkins Jr. to wrestle for bronze in Greco-Roman

David Calkins Jr. at 92 kg, with a 9-0 victory with four gut-wrenches to advance into the bronze medal match in Greco-Roman.
ATHENS, Greece — Women’s freestyle action kicked off this morning at the U17 World Championships, with five-of-ten Team USA athletes taking the mat. Madison Healey (43 kg), Morgan Turner (49 kg), and Ella Poalillo (73 kg) all advanced to the semifinals—and did so in dominant fashion.
Healey and Poalillo each recorded two pins, while Turner notched both a fall and a technical fall victory. Healey has relied on her speed and quickness, Poalillo has excelled with her arm bar series, and two-time U17 World medalist Morgan Turner has looked outstanding in every position.
Also competing today were U17 Pan-American champions Emma Bacon (57 kg) and Violette Lasure (65 kg). Lasure opened with a strong 10-2 victory but was pinned in her next bout and has been eliminated from the tournament. Bacon, leading 3-2 in the closing seconds of her match, was scored upon with just 0.2 seconds remaining and lost a heartbreaking bout to Japan’s Sayuki Tanada. She now awaits repechage, dependent on the outcome of this evening’s semifinals.
In Greco-Roman repechage at 92 kg, David Calkins Jr. made the most of his opportunity. He controlled the center of the mat with an underhook, earned the passivity point, and followed it with a series of gut wrenches to defeat his opponent from Brazil. He will face Ionut Patru of Romania in tonight’s bronze medal match.
Today’s action resumes at 5 p.m. local time with the women’s freestyle semifinals. Greco-Roman will conclude its tournament with championship finals and medal matches beginning at 6 p.m.
