A legend in both amateur and professional combat sports, Mark Coleman is known for his power, perseverance, and heart. An NCAA Division I champion for Ohio State University and an All- American for Miami (Ohio) University, Coleman later became a World silver medalist and Olympian for the United States in freestyle wrestling.

He made history in 1997 by becoming the first UFC heavyweight champion, revolutionizing the sport with his dominant wrestling-based style.

Nicknamed “The Hammer,” Coleman is widely credited as one of the pioneers of ground-and-pound. His legacy in mixed martial arts was cemented with his induction into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2008.

In March 2024, Coleman added a new chapter to his legacy, one marked by extraordinary courage. While staying at his childhood home, he was awakened at 3 a.m. by his dog, Lil’ Hammer. Discovering the house was on fire, Coleman rushed to rescue his parents, both in their 80s. After safely leading his father out, he re-entered the burning home and pulled his mother, an asthmatic, through heavy smoke and flames to safety, before collapsing from smoke inhalation.

Coleman was airlifted to a hospital and placed in a medically induced coma. Upon waking, he learned his parents were safe, though his beloved dog had died in the fire. Just three days after leaving the hospital, he was back training, joined by a new Rottweiler, King Martell, as he focused on regaining his strength, staying sober, and honoring the memory of the dog who helped save his family.

For his incredible bravery, lifelong resilience, and unwavering commitment to personal growth, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame proudly honors Mark Coleman as our 2025 Medal of Courage recipient.
