Hilday to go for men’s freestyle gold, Carr for bronze at Polyak Imre & Varga Janos Memorial Ranking Event

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Trent Hidlay will go for a gold medal at 92 kg, and David Carr will compete for a bronze medal at 74 kg in men’s freestyle at the Polyak Imre & Varga Janos Memorial Ranking Event on Friday night.

Hilday had three strong wins on his way to Friday’s gold-medal finals, where he will face Miriana Maisuradze of Georgia.

He opened with a strong 7-3 decision over 2021 World bronze medalist Abubakr Abakarov of Azerbaijan. In the quarterfinals, he stopped Krisztian Angyal of Hungary in a 10-0 technical fall. In his semifinals match, he scored the opening takedown against 2024 Olympic bronze medalist Dauren Kurugliev of Greece, who was injured during the takedown action and could not finish the match.

Carr opened his day with a 5-3 victory over two-time Olympian and 2019 U23 World champion Turan Bayramov of Azerbaijan. In his quarterfinals match, Carr shut down Orosobek Toktomambetov of Kyrgyzstan, 8-0. His semifinals match was a high-scoring 9-7 loss to 2024 U23 World champion Kota Takahashi of Japan. Carr came back late in the match with takedowns but could not close the gap.

Carr has drawn 2021 and 2022 World silver medalist Tajmuraz Salkazanov of Slovakia in his bronze medal match.

Hidlay and Carr are members of the 2025 U.S. Senior World Team that will compete in Zagreb, Croatia. It will be their first Senior World Championships. Carr is a past U20 World champion and Hidlay has won age-group World medals earlier in their career. They were the only two U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers who compehttps://arena.uww.org/weight-category/1f04c011-8c09-6570-babb-5bbdf162d0cbted on Friday.

The U.S. women’s freestyle team also competed on Friday. Their results will be reported in a separate article.

The finals will be held at 5:00 p.m. local time in Budapest, which is six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone.

The event will be broadcast live by FloWrestling, with results on UWW Arena.
