FARGO, N.D. – 2024 U17 World champion Taina Fernandez of Maryland has qualified for the championship finals at 135 pounds in both the Junior and the 16U girls divisions at the 2025 U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals on Sunday morning.
Fernandez is the first wrestler to make the finals in both age groups since USA Wrestling changed the schedule three years ago to have the Junior and 16U tournaments wrestled at the same time for each discipline.
In the 16U quarterfinals, Fernandez scored a technical fall over Chloe Wehry of Minnesota on Mat 2, then ran to Mat 8 for her Junior quarterfinals against Kate Doughty of Colorado, who she also won by technical fall.
The semifinals were held immediately after the quarterfinals ended. Since 16U periods are two minutes long and Junior periods are three minutes long, the 16U semifinals started a bit earlier than the Junior semifinals.
In the 16U semifinals, Fernandez defeated Paisley Morrison of Oregon by technical fall, 10-0, Later in the session, Fernandez defeated Morgan Lucio of Arizona, 10-0 by technical fall.
In the Junior finals, Fernandez will face Maddie Marsh of Wisconsin and in the 16U finals, Fernandez draws Emily Beckley of Oklahoma.
The championships finals begin at 2:30 p.m. Central live on FloWrestling.
