CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – After day one of the 2025 Southern Scuffle, Army holds an early lead with 97 team points and seven semifinalists.
Leading the way for the Black Knights was Richard Treanor (141), Dakota Morris (157), Gunner Filipowicz (165), Dalton Harkins (174), Wolfgang Frable (197), Lucas Stoddard (285) and Brady Colbert (285).
Treanor went 3-0 on the first day of the tournament, opening with a pin in the first period just 1:23 into the match. His momentum carried into the next rounds, picking up a major decision in the round of 16 and a 3-1 decision in the quarterfinals over the fourth seed. In the semifinals, Treanor matches up against North Carolina’s Jayden Scott, who knocked off top seed Oklahoma’s Mosha Schwartz in the quarterfinals in sudden victory.
At 157 pounds, Army’s Morris reached the semifinals with two decisions and a technical fall, and sees North Dakota State’s Max Petersen, the fourth seed, in the semifinals. Filipowicz will battle Chattanooga’s Jackson Hurst in the next round after a tough path on day one, going 4-0 with two major decisions and two falls. In 2024, Filipowicz placed second at this tournament, falling in the finals, 11-5.
In the 174-pound bracket, the top four seeds all reached the semifinals. Harkins, the third seed, will face a challenge in second seed Gaven Sax of Oklahoma tomorrow morning. Frable earned the sole takedown in the second period of a quarterfinal battle against No. 1 seed Levi Hopkins of Campbell to advance.
Stoddard and Colbert are on opposite sides of the bracket and could meet in the finals at 285 pounds, pending semifinal wins for both Black Knights. At the 2024 U23 World Championships, Stoddard represented Team USA in men’s freestyle at 125 kg, placing fifth, and is a 2024 U23 Pan American Championships gold medalist.
Penn State’s Zack Ryder, a three-time age-group World medalist, advanced to the semifinals at 184 pounds with two decisions and a technical fall. Ryder takes on third seed TJ Stewart of Virginia Tech, a 2024 NCAA All-American, in the semifinal round.
At 197 pounds, 2024 U20 World Team member Connor Mirasola of Penn State went 3-0 on the first day of action. Mirasola earned three technical falls en route to the semifinals, and is slated to face Army’s Frable.
Of last year’s champions in the mix on the championship side, Northern Colorado’s Stevo Poulin remains the only competitor with a chance to repeat his title victory. Northern Colorado’s Dom Serrano placed second at last year’s tournament, and reached the semifinals after day one, going 3-0.
In the team standings, it’s Oklahoma in second with 92.5 team points and four semifinalists. Penn State follows in third with 77 team points, and four semifinalists. North Carolina and Campbell round out the top five with 68 and 67.5 team points, respectively.
The Southern Scuffle will resume at 10:00 a.m. (ET) on Sunday with the championship semifinals and consolations. The championship finals are set for 3 p.m. (ET).
