Murry I. Gurfein
USA Wrestling and the wrestling community at large celebrate the life of dedicated wrestling supporter and superfan Murry I. Gurfein, who recently passed away at his home after 78 spirited years of life.
Murry was a dedicated father to his son Eric, who was his greatest pride and joy. He was born in 1947 to Mark and Zilla (Ceil), and was brother of Ria, Rob, and Sonja, and a nephew, cousin, brother-in-law, and uncle. He was also a thoughtful and loyal friend to many.
In the words of his sister Sonja, Murry was a passionate, lifelong fan of NCAA and USA Wrestling. He took tremendous pride in his connection to the sport. He was well-known and highly regarded in the community, which brought him great joy over the years. He also loved music and was a talented singer and guitarist. He was drawn to memorable sayings—particularly pearls of wisdom from public figures that he admired.
While Murry faced struggles, he, nevertheless, remained steadfast and determined. He refused to stop dreaming, even as severe illness took its toll. As one of his helpers said to [Sonja], “Murry had plans.” Indeed, he did.
Murry shared with his sister, Sonja, his intention to attend an upcoming NCAA wrestling event, despite his declining health. He loved the sport of wrestling through and through.
Many members of the wrestling community knew Murry well and appreciated his zest for the sport.
“Affectionally known to many as just “Madman Murry,” Murry Gurfein was one of American Wrestling’s greatest fans, always positively lighting up wrestling events around the United States. He was one of Team USA wrestling’s staunchest supporters. Wrestling has lost a piece of our history with the passing of Murry. Our thoughts and prayers are with his son Eric and his entire family at this time.” – Rich Bender, USA Wrestling Executive Director
“Murry was such a passionate, fun-loving guy! His love for our sport was unmatched, and he appreciated wrestlers who had that competitive spirit! He will be missed. Blessings to his family.” – Mark Manning, University of Nebraska Head Coach
“Murry was the ultimate fan and supporter of wrestling at every level. He truly understood the toughness and mindset the sport demands, and he admired anyone who embodied those qualities. It was an honor and a privilege to have such a meaningful relationship with him. He will be deeply missed.” – Ryan Morningstar, University of Iowa Assistant Coach
