DES MOINES, Iowa – In a loaded field stacked with nationally ranked athletes, four wrestlers were able to repeat as champions in the Girls 9th-12th Grade division at the Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals on Sunday.

The event used USA Wrestling’s modified folkstyle rules which includes a step-out point, as well as a neutral start for all three periods.

The repeat champions, with their national rankings, were No. 3 Katey Valdez of Betterman Elite Wrestling (105), No. 6 Riley Rayome of Highlander WC (115), No. 5 Sierra Chiesa of Bad Karma WC (125) and No. 11 Mia Cienega of Ascend Wrestling Academy (207).

Valdez, Rayome and Chiesa were dominant in their finals matches, while Cienega won a tough round robin.

Valdez opened up her offense on the way to a 16-1 technical fall over No. 15 Alicia Kenfack of North Dakota. Valdez hammered to a 12-1 lead in the first period with a takedown and two four-point near falls, then closed it out with a takedown in the second period.

Rayome scored a pin in 3:41 over Malia Ottow of Ascend Wrestling Academy. She scored a takedown in the first period to lead 3-0, then scored a takedown right to a pin in the second period.

Chiesa had a slow start, giving up an opening takedown and trailing after one period against No. 29 Franky Groom-Frey of Wisconsin. In the second period, Chiesa scored a takedown and was dominant on top, turning Groom-Frey and ultimately getting the pin with eight seconds left in the period at the 3:52 mark

Cienega won a round robin with two other nationally ranked athletes, beating No. 17 Phoenix Molina of Patton Trained WC, 3-0, and scoring a 14-6 major decision over No. 28 Katianna Martinez of California.

In an exciting bout at 130 pounds, No. 2 Samantha Sachs of Church Boyz WC had a tight battle with No. 21 Lilyana Balderas, who Sachs defeated in the semifinals of the 2024 California state championships. Sachs led 7-3 after two periods, but Balderas battled back to make it closer, with a final 9-6 score. Sachs was a 2024 Junior Nationals champion in freestyle.

At 120 pounds, No. 6 Caley Graber of the Summit Wrestling Academy took care of business quickly against No. 18 Leiannah Landreth of the Wichita Training Center, getting a takedown then turning Landreth to secure the fall in 1:44.

No. 3 Aleksandra Bastiac of the Highland WC got a slow start, but scored a third-period pin over No. 13 Taydem Bylin of Mat Demon WC at 140 pounds. Bastaic trailed 1-0 after the first two periods, but in the third period, she took down Bylin for a 3-1 lead and put her to her back to secure the pin.

At 145 pounds, No. 2 Violette Lasure of Bad Karma WC used two big moves to defeat No. 5 Amelia Fawcett of the Pioneer Grappling Academy, 8-2,  After a 1-1 tie in the first period, Lasure scored a takedown, going upper body to a trip and a 4-1 lead. In the third period, another upper body position led to a leg attack takedown to open up the match.

In a battle of rising stars, Easton Dadiomoff of Tennessee came from behind to win the finals at 95 pounds over Cassidy O’Connell of Crass Trained Weigh In Club. Down early, Dadiomoff tied the match at 5-5 after two periods. A third-period takedown gave her the 8-5 victory.

At 100 pounds, unranked Piper Montoya of the Basement Brawlers WC made a big statement with a 13-3 major decision over No. 11 Angelica Serratos of Surfside X Wrestling. Montoya scored a takedown and added four backpoints in the third period for the win.

Another rapidly improving young athlete, No. 16 Aubree Gutierrez of Surfside X Wrestling, got her offense untracked in a 17-4 major decision over No. 14 Reanah Utterback of Sebolt Wrestling Academy at 110.  Gutierrez set the tone for the match by hitting a headlock. She scored three takedowns and two four-point turns in the match.

No. 17 Landri VonGonten of Boneyard Wrestling Academy broke open a close see-saw match with a pin in 4:36 over Gwendolyn Jewell of the Premier WC at 135.

At 155 pounds, No. 22 Angelina Jiang of the California RTC finished a single leg attack with just two seconds left in sudden death to defeat Juliet Alt of the Bad Karma WC, 6-3. The match was tied 3-3 in regulation, with each wrestler securing a takedown.

No. 5 Jael Miller of the Bad Karma WC secured a pin in 5:26 over No. 16 Laila Hustoles of Oklahoma in the finals at 170 pounds. Hustoles scored the first takedown, but Miller responded with a reversal and a second period takedown to take the lead, then turned Hustoles to secure the fall.

In a wide-open 190-pound final, No. 18 Evelyn Vargas of the Falcon WC defeated No. 7 Libby Dix of Iowa, 12-9. The match was tied at 7-7 in the third period, but Vargas was able to score a clutch spin behind takedown to take the lead for good.

In an entertaining match to close out the event at 235 pounds, No. 7 Ariana Chavez of Borger High School scored a 7-3 win in the overtime tiebreaker to stop No. 6 Chloe Hoselton of SOT-C. The match was tied at 3-3 in regulation and nobody scored in sudden victory. Chavez chose neutral in her tiebreaker and scored a takedown to lead 6-3. Hoselton also chose neutral and nailed a headlock, but time ran out. Hoselton’s corner challenge and it was denied, giving Chavez the 7-3 win.

The team title went to California’s Surfside X Wrestling, which had nine placewinners in the tournament.
