Jelle, Sanchez, Hedeman, Anderson among champions in loaded Boys National Recruiting Showcase

DES MOINES, Iowa – Minnesota state champion Christian Jelle of the Scoring Edge Wrestling Center, the champion at 138 pounds, was named Outstanding Wrestler after an exciting championship finals at the 2024 Boys National High School Recruiting Showcase in Hyvee Hall at the Iowa Events Center on Saturday.
Jelle, a 2024 Minnesota AA champion from Grand Rapids High School, scored an impressive 18-5 major decision over Cody Trevino of the Big Game WC in the finals. Jelle scored multiple takedowns in the match, pouring on the offense in the third period, for the impressive win. Trevino was third in the 2024 Iowa 3A State Championships for Bettendorf High School.
This is an elite competition in which all of the entries met specific performance requirements in order to qualify. The boys competed in folkstyle, which is the style they will wrestle in college. This is an event which attracts the interest of college recruiters and wrestling fans.
In a battle of high-level competitors at 106 pounds, Samuel Sanchez of Esperanza High School in California, a 2024 U17 World freestyle champion, defeated Michael Rundell of the Wrestling Academy, a 2024 16U Nationals champion in freestyle and Greco-Roman. Sanchez earned an 11-1 major decision, opening up the match with a takedown and turn in the third period. Rundell is from Illinois power Oak Park River Forest High School.
Two-time Iowa state champion Jace Hedeman of Immortal Athletics WC was impressive in his 13-2 major decision over Aaron Silva of California in the 132 pound finals. Hedeman was dominant on his feet, scoring a takedown in each period. Hedeman won Iowa 2A titles for Union LaPorte City High School.
USA Wrestling traditionally tracks all of the high school state champions who are entered in the National Recruiting Showcase events, and there were 64 state champions who pre-registered to compete. The finals featured 10 state champions, along with a number of state runners-up and bronze medalists.
The wrestler with the most state titles in the field, four-time Alabama state champion William Anderson of the Ironclad WC, scored a tight 1-0 victory over Minnesota state runner-up Charles Vanier of Super D Wrestling in the 144 pound finals. Anderson rode Vanier in the second period and won the match on a third-period escape. Anderson won four Alabama 6A titles for Athens High School, while Vanier was a Minnesota AAA runner-up for Eden Prairie High School.
There were two champions from Izzy Style Wrestling in Illinois, Carson Weber at 150 pounds and Brody Kelly at 175 pounds.
Weber, who was third in the 2024 Illinois 3A States for Joliet East High School, defeated 2024 Colorado state champion Billy Greenwood of GRIT Athletics WC, 7-2. Weber scored takedowns in the first and second period. Greenwood, a Colorado 5A champion for Poudre High School, was a past U17 Greco-Roman World Team member.
Kelly, who was third in the 2024 Illinois 3A States for Elmhurst IC Catholic High School, defeated Arizona D2 state champion Ronald Robinson of Victory Elite Wrestling, 4-1. Kelly scored a first-period takedown and a third-period escape for his points. Robinson was a 2023 Arizona state champion for Desert Mountain High School,
At 190 pounds, Jimmy Mastny of the Relentless Training Center, scored a takedown in sudden-death to defeat Aiden Cooley of Best Trained Wrestling, 4-1. Mastny was a 2024 Illinois 1A state champion for Woodstock Marian High School. Cooley, a member of the 2023 U17 World Greco-Roman Team, was second in the 2024 Texas state championships of Allen High School.
At 120 pounds, Utah 6A state runner-up Lander Bosh of the Sanderson Wrestling Academy edged two-time Texas state champion Mikey Ruiz of the Panhandle RTC, 4-2. Bosh scored the only takedown of the match in the first period.
In a battle of Illinois state placewinners, Demetrios Carrera of Team Elite Wrestling beat Michael Esteban, 4-2 at 126 pounds. Carrera jumped to a 4-0 lead on an escape and a takedown and finished off the win.
Maximus Dhabolt of the Sebolt Wrestling Academy broke open a close match with a pair of takedown to defeat Liam Fox of the Bear Cave WC at 157 pounds. Dhabolt was third in the 2024 Iowa 3A states, while Fox is a three-time Wyoming state champion.
At 165 pounds, Jarrett Wadsen of the Pinnacle WC in Minnesota, in overtime, scored three backpoints to secure a 5-2 tiebreaker win over Zachary Montez of Blue Line Training Academy of Illinois.
In the overtime tiebreakers at 215 pounds, Iowa state champion Ashton Honnold of the Moen Wrestling Academy got an escape then rode out Elijah Schunke of the Heartland Wrestling Academy, 3-2.
Scoring the only takedown of the match, Peter Savarino of the Spartan WC of Tennessee defeated Pennsylvania’s Caleb Tyler of the Mason-Dixon Mat Hawgs, 4-0 at 285 pounds.
