These events are an example of the outstanding opportunities provided by USA Wrestling state associations and local event organizers who have made a commitment to be a part of USA Wrestling, the largest wrestling organization in the world.

Eight U.S. athletes win titles at Journeymen Women’s World Classic against international opponents

MANHEIM, Pa. – Some of the nation’s top high school girls won individual titles at the Journeymen Women’s World Classic held at Spooky Nook this past Saturday.

The event featured just shy of 40 U.S. entries who are recognized in the National Girls High School Preseason Rankings. Many of the nation’s top club programs brought their best wrestlers. International competitors came from nine nations: Canada, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Netherlands, Peru.

U.S. champions, with national rankings if appropriate, were:  #9 Gigi Sullivan of Apex/Monroe Woodbury (100), #4 Kayla Batres of the South Side WC (107), #20 Paris Soria of Monster Garage (114), #4 Alexis Lazar of Michigan Revolution (132), Camilla Hathaway of SHWC/Mt Lebanon (138), #2 Violette Lasure of Orchard WC (145), #3 Adriana Palumbo of GPS Wrestling (165) and Ylyana Sandoval of Wyoming Seminary (185).

Sullivan, Batres, Hathaway, Lasure and Palumbo all defeated opponents from Germany in the finals. Palumbo stopped three-time U17 World medalist Lotta Englich, 12-5. Sullivan beat Klara Winkler, who was fifth in the 2023 U17 Worlds, by a 10-0 technical fall. Batres topped two-time U17 European bronze medalist Josephine Wrensch by a 10-0 technical fall. Lasure stopped U17 European bronze medalist Ayla Sahin, 13-6. Hathaway defeated 2024 U17 European champion Leonie Steigert, 5-4.

In the all-USA finals, Soria defeated #10 Marie Sharp of Blair by tech fall, 10-0. Lazar took an injury default win in the finals against #13 Lilliana Banks of Aviators Wrestling. Sandoval won a four-athlete round robin, with wins over two ranked Americans, #10 Brynn Shepardson of Journeymen and #26 Brooklynn Newton of Team Ohio.

The international champions were Timi Coles of Canada/Combat School (94), Kaura Coles of Canada/Combat School (120), Sophie Ritter of Hungary (126) and Uldana Tileukhan of Kazakhstan (152).

The Coles sisters live in Montana. Kaura was a 2024 U17 World champion and is No. 1 in the National Girls High School rankings at 115. Ritter has won three European titles, two at the U15 level and one at the U17 level. Tileukhan was a 2024 U17 World bronze medalist. Ritter was named Outstanding Wrestler in the Women’s World Classic.

The next big international event being hosted by the Journeymen WC is the Journeymen World Freestyle Classic, which is set for the Albany area in New York, April 5-6. Like the fall event was for girls, the Journeymen World Freestyle Classic in the spring brings top boys from many nations around the world and gives talented U.S. boys a chance for outstanding international experience and helps prepare for the upcoming age-group World Team Trials events.
