Morgan Turner pins in the U17 World semifinals.
ATHENS, Greece — Day three of the U17 World Championships saw the women’s freestyle athletes take the mats for the first time at Ano Liossia Olympic Sports Hall. Team USA sent three women to Wednesday evening’s semifinals, with two-time U17 World medalist Morgan Turner (49 kg) pushing through to the finals.
Turner took out Anhelina Burkina, a UWW registered athlete, via fall in the semifinals. She went up quick, 4-0, then hooked up a nearside cradle to ger her second pin of the tournament. Turner will face two-time U17 Asian champion Yu Kataoka from Japan tomorrow night in pursuit of her second World title and third-straight U17 World medal.
Madison Healey (43 kg) and Ella Poalillo (73 kg) will both wrestle for bronze medals after coming up short in the semifinals. Healey lost 1-1 on criteria to Rachana of India, who was a U17 World silver medalist in 2023. Poalillo was defeated 11-0 by returning champion Kajal of India. Bronze medal match opponents for both women will be determined in tomorrow’s repechage round.
Emma Bacon (57 kg) entered the semifinals with strong hopes of a repechage opportunity following a 5-3 defeat to Japan’s Sayuki Tanada in the preliminary rounds. In an unfortunate bounce for the American, Tanada was pinned in the semis, dashing Bacon’s medal chances.
Competition resumes at 10:30 a.m. local time on Thursday with repechage bouts for athletes still in medal contention from group one, followed immediately by group two qualification matches in the 40 kg, 46 kg, 53 kg, 61 kg, and 69 kg weight classes. Semifinals will wrestle at 5 p.m. and medal matches for group one wrestlers will follow at 6 p.m. Athens, Greece, is seven hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time.
