College wrestling notebook: Mortimer claims title at Missouri Valley Open, Iowa wins Cy-Hawk Dual, OSU’s Hendrickson celebrates in style

Week four of the college wrestling season has come to a close. Fans were treated to spectacular showings at the Missouri Valley Open, Black Knight Invitational, and PRTC Keystone Classic. Iowa added to its long history on Saturday night, Minnesota’s Gable Steveson returned to action, and so much more.
Here are a few things to note week four of the college wrestling season.
Upset of the week
Oklahoma senior Antonio Lorenzo, ranked No. 29 in the nation, used a third period takedown to defeat No. 2 Jore Volk in OU’s win over Wyoming. The Sooners defeated the Cowboys 27-6 in their home opener at McCasland Fieldhouse, going on to claim wins in eight of the ten weights.
Dual of the week
The second-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes defeated No. 12 Iowa State in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Dual on Saturday night, 21-15. The Hawkeyes won six of ten matches in the dual, marking the 20th consecutive win in the annual Cy-Hawk series for Iowa with over 14,000 in attendance at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Performance of the week
Grand Valley State’s Sage Mortimer won the Missouri Valley Open at 110 pounds on Saturday. Mortimer, ranked No. 2 in the NCAA, pinned NCAA No. 1 and returning NCWWC champion Ava Bayless in 2:41. Mortimer is coming off a 2024 U23 World title for Team USA. Grand Valley State had two champions in the tournament, Mortimer and freshman Sabrina Nauss at 180 pounds.
Photo of the week
In Oklahoma State’s home opener at Gallagher-Iba Arena, the Cowboys were dominant in a 32-6 victory over Wyoming. Wyatt Hendrickson capped off the night at heavyweight, getting Kevin Zimmer to his back for a pin in the second period. After the victory, Hendrickson hit a standing backflip amid confetti after the statement win.
Move of the week
Western New England’s Linda Holeman hit back-to-back five point moves for the win over the weekend.
