College wrestling notebook: Iowa women get statement win, Stanford upsets in Ames, and eight teams dual on USS Yorktown

The college wrestling season is in full swing following an exciting week two of competition. Fans were treated to several premier events, including a series of dual meets on the USS Yorktown, the Journeymen Wranglemania and Collegiate Classic, and a matchup of two premier women’s teams expected to compete for national titles.
Here are five things to note week two of the college wrestling season.
Dual of the week
It was a battle of the second-ranked NCAA team versus the second ranked NAIA team on the women’s wrestling front as Iowa defeated Life 30-14 in Marietta, Georgia, on Friday.

Upset of the week
The No. 20 Stanford Cardinal went into Ames and took down No. 6 Iowa State, 23-21, to pick up the first major dual meet upset of the season. True freshmen Aden Valencia and Grigor Cholakyan secured falls to spearhead the Stanford effort.

The inaugural Throwdown on the Yorktown took eight men’s and women’s college wrestling programs to the deck of the USS Yorktown for a unique evening of dual meet action. Participating programs included Virginia, Gardner-Webb, The Citadel and Army West Point from the NCAA Div. I men, Newberry and Lander from the NCAA Div. II men, and Campbellsville and Presbyterian from the NAIA and NCAA women’s divisions.
Move of the week
Arizona State’s four-time NCAA All-American senior Cohlton Schultz punctuated a title at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic with a pin over Isaac Trumble of NC State. Both Schultz an Trumble wrestled in the finals of the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Schultz in Greco-Roman and Trumble in freestyle.
Performance of the week
Utah Valley’s Terrell Barraclough continued his hot streak with an 8-0 major decision over No. 12 Bubba Wilson of Nebraska during dual meet competition last Friday in Orem, Utah. The Huskers won the dual, 32-7, but Barraclough continues to be a highlight for coach Adam Hall’s Wolverines as he moved to 6-0 on the season. Already this season, Barraclough has a win over NCAA All-American Hunter Garvin of Stanford and won the Menlo Open.
