NEW YORK, N.Y. – The United States won eight of the 10 gold medals in men’s freestyle as the
Bill Farrell Memorial International wrapped up at the New York Athletic Club on Saturday afternoon.
2016 Olympic champion and three-time World champion Kyle Snyder competed for the first time since the 2024 Olympics in Paris, winning both of his matches at 97 kg. Snyder led 5-1 at the break against National Team member Michael Macchiavello, and powered for six second-period points for an 11-1 technical fall. It was one of five all-USA gold-medal finals.
High school phenom PJ Duke won the gold medal at 70 kg and was named Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament. He won an entertaining 10-4 decision in the finals over Will Lewan, scoring eight of his points in the first period. Duke is a senior at Minisink Valley High School in New York, a 2024 U20 World bronze medalist and a Penn State commit.
Duke was one of three high school stars to battle to a spot in the finals, but the only one to finish with the gold medal.
At 57 kg, past Senior National Team member Daniel DeShazer needed just 56 seconds to secure a 10-0 technical fall over high school star Nathan Desmond, who competes for Wyoming Seminary. DeShazer won all three of his bouts by technical fall.
Also claiming gold-medals in all-USA finals were Marcus Coleman at 86 kg and Trent Hillger at 125 kg.
Coleman, the former Iowa State star, was in command on the way to a 12-1 first-period technical fall over Clay Lautt, who competed for North Carolina. Coleman also won his semifinals bout by technical fall.
Hillger won a wide-open match 13-10 in the finals against a familiar foe, Jordan Wood, which was not decided until Hillger got a takedown with 29 seconds on the clock. Wood trailed early, but scored eight points in the second period to make it a great match. Hillger starred for Wisconsin and Wood at Lehigh.
Elroy Perkin II, an assistant coach at Air Force, won his first Bill Farrell International, by scoring a 12-1 technical fall over Canada’s Adam Thomson at 74 kg. It was one of the biggest wins for Perkin, after a number of years competing on the Senior freestyle circuit.
There were three weight classes which were round-robins, and two of the gold medals at these weights went to U.S. athletes, Evan Wick at 79 kg and Eric Schultz at 92 kg.
Wick won four matches by technical fall in a five-athlete round robin. His two biggest wins came in the opening session, with wins over tough U.S. rivals Kennedy Monday and Joseph Lavallee.
Schultz scored technical falls over Americans Jack Wehmeyer and Jack Darrah to capture his three-athlete roundrobin.
The other two champions were Toshihiro Hasegawa of Japan at 61 kg and Boburjon Berdiyorov of Uzbekistan at 65 kg. Hasegawa defeated U.S. high school star William Dekraker III, 8-3. Berdiyorov won four matches in a five-athlete round robin, all by technical fall.
