14U Freestyle National Duals brackets
OAKS, Pa.— The first day of the 14U Freestyle National Duals has wrapped at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks. Eight teams advanced to the Gold/Silver pool, as all preliminary pool rounds, and one color pool round, were completed.
Ohio Scarlet, the No. 1 seed in the tournament based on PIN ratings, won Pool A on Friday after going 4-0 in preliminary action. The team opened the tournament with a dominant 79-2 win over Rhode Island White that included 11 technical falls. In the second round, Ohio Scarlet brought down Missouri Red 66-14. Ohio Scarlet continued its momentum in the semifinals, defeating Arkansas 69-12. They then went on to defeat Minnesota Blue in the finals by a score of 47-31. Minnesota Blue came back to take second after knocking down Oklahoma Blue in a true-second dual.
In the opening dual in Pool B, California defeated Virginia 56-26, winning 12 of 18 matches. California edged out Iowa in the semifinals in a closely fought 41-37 win. In the finals, California outscored New Jersey 51-29 to reach the Gold/Silver pool, winning 11 of the 18 matches. Two were won by fall as David McClurg (92 pounds) and Adrian Barbosa (136 pounds) pinned their opponents. New Jersey bounced back to claim second place in Pool B, reaching the Gold/Silver pool.
Illinois won first place in Pool C, starting off strong by defeating Oklahoma Red 65–14. In the quarterfinals, Illinois defeated Rhode Island Gold 69-12, winning all but two matches in the dual. Despite a closer semifinal matchup between Illinois and Ohio Grey, Illinois prevailed 48-36. Illinois emerged victorious over Michigan 43-35 in the finals of Pool C, winning a close matchup as eight of the nine wins were bonus point victories. Ohio Grey placed second in the pool, advancing to the Gold/Silver pool.
Defending champions Pennsylvania Blue put on outstanding efforts to take first place in Pool D. They defeated Louisiana 76-8 in the quarterfinal after a bye in the first round. After advancing to the semifinal, Pennsylvania Blue defeated Utah 68-11to extend their winning run. Pennsylvania Blue passed Wisconsin 61-19 in the finals of Pool D, advancing to the Gold/Silver pool. It was Wisconsin that reached the Gold/Silver pool after defeating Maryland to keep their top 8 finish dreams alive.
The competition continued through the first round of the color pools on day one, so action resumes with rounds two and three of the color pools on Thursday morning. Ohio Scarlet, Pennsylvania Blue, Wisconsin and California won their opening matchups in the Gold/Silver pool.
The tournament continues on Saturday, June 15, at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks. All action will be broadcast live by FloWrestling.
