FARGO, N.D. – Pennsylvania went a perfect five-for-five in the championship finals, to complete a dominating team performance in the USMC 16U National Championships in men’s freestyle.

The Keystone State champions were Keegan Bassett (94), Justin Farnsworth (100), Shamus Regan (113), Will Detar (120) and Elijah Brown (190).

Overall, Pennsylvania had a 17 All-Americans, collecting a total of 231 points. Illinois, led by two individual champions, was second with 147 points, and Iowa, with three individual champions, placed third with 136 points.

Regan won his second straight 16U Nationals freestyle title, defeating Paul Cruz of California in the finals, 5-0. Last year, Regan represented Tennessee and was the 100-pound champion.

The words gritty and tough come to mind when describing the Pennsylvania performance in the 16U finals. All of the matches were won by decision, with three of them within a few points. When push came to shove, the Keystone Kids got it done.

Bassett beat Tyler Verceles of Maryland, 4-2, and Farnsworth won by the same 4-2 margin over Corey Brown, also of Maryland. Deter stopped Liston Seibert of Ohio in an 11-8 shootout. Brown opened a comfortable lead in his 8-2 win over Maximus Konopka of Connecticut.

Regan was among three champions who repeated from last year, joined by Jayden James of New Jersey at 150 pounds and Aaron Stewart of Illinois at 165 pounds.

James had six technical falls and a pin in his dominant march to the title. He stopped Maximus Dhabolt of Iowa in the finals, 10-0.

Stewart was named Outstanding Wrestler in the 16U men’s freestyle division after a dominant 10-0 technical fall over Jayden Williams of Michigan in the finals. Stewart won all seven of his matches by technical fall, winning by a combined 73-0 over his foes.

Stewart was one of three athletes who remain eligible for the 16U Triple Crown, having won the 2024 16U Folkstyle Nationals in Iowa in March and the men’s freestyle tournament here in Fargo. He is joined by Noah Bull of Utah (144) and Jonathan Rulo of Illinois (285). They will need to win Saturday night’s 16U Greco-Roman title to bring home a Triple Crown.

Bull was powerful from the top, turning Dominic Wilson of Texas multiple times in a 16-2 technical fall in the finals. Rulo fired up the Illinois faithful with a pin in the finals over Makhi Rodgers of Wisconsin.

Iowa had a successful finals round, bringing home individual champions Hayden Schwab (106), Justis Jesuroga (138) and Brayden Koester (175). All won razor thin decisions. Schwab beat P.J. Terranova of New Jersey, 2-1. Jesuroga edged Hunter Stevens of Wisconsin, 4-3. Koester won by criteria, beating Cody Savage of Vermont, 7-7.

Stephen Myers of West Virginia defeated 2023 16U Nationals freestyle runner-up Bruno Cassioppi of Illinois in the finals at 126 pounds, 12-6.

In the opening finals featuring Southern states, Ariah Mills of Georgia stopped Hudson Chittum of Tennessee, 5-2 at 88 pounds.

Other individual champions were Clinton Shepherd of Indiana (132), Lucas Boe of Indiana (157) and Alex Taylor of Ohio (215).

Shepherd was in control in a 12-3 victory over Ashton Besmer of California. Boe shut out New Jersey’s Gabriel Logan, 8-0. Taylor won an 11-7 shootout over Ryder Smith of Tennessee.

Thursday is an off day in the FargoDome, although the men’s 16U and Junior wrestlers have the opportunity to do Beach Wrestling on Thursday morning at Gastropub Volleyball, starting at 9:00 a.m. The tournament concludes with the Junior and 16U Nationals in Greco-Roman on Friday and Saturday.
