College wrestling notebook: Minnesota defeats South Dakota State, champions crowned at Bob Smith Open

No. 9 Minnesota defeats No. 14 South Dakota State, 30-3, at the First Bank & Trust Arena in Brookings, S.D.
The fifth week of the college wrestling season was a short one, due to the Thanksgiving holiday. There was plenty of action for college wrestling fans to enjoy, including the fourth-annual Carolina Clash, hosted by Lander. The Minnesota Gophers took down the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, and champions were crowned at the Bob Smith Open and Mat Town Open I. Check out a few highlights from week five.
Performance of the week
Glenville State’s Kyle Homet held a 4-0 record this past weekend at the Carolina Clash in South Carolina. The Pioneers went 4-0, defeating Newberry, Mount Olive, Coker and No. 18 UNC Pembroke. Homet won two of his matches by major decision, one by a decision and one by fall.
Upset of the week
Minnesota’s Max McEnelly delivered the performance of the week with a 9-6 victory in overtime over No. 4 Bennett Berge of South Dakota State. The Gophers, ranked ninth, defeated No. 17 SDSU 30-3 on Sunday afternoon in Brookings, S.D. McEnelly’s win at 184 pounds secured three team points and was one of nine wins for Minnesota.
Move of the week
Lindsey Lopez of Fort Hays State secured a match-winning takedown with less than a second left in the championship match, earning the 117-pound title at the Bob Smith Open.

No. 15 Lander went 3-1 at the Carolina Clash on Sunday. The Bearcats defeated Salem, Mount Olive and No. 18 UNC Pembroke. Ashland defeated Lander, 25-14, in the third dual of the event.
