AMMAN, Jordan – The United States will have two wrestlers competing for bronze medals on Wednesday, the final day of Greco-Roman at the 2024 U17 World Championships.

Joseph Jeter won a wild 10-7 decision in his 71 kg Greco-Roman repechage match to advance to a bronze-medal bout on Wednesday evening. Jeter fell behind 7-1 in the first period, as Ahmadli got a head pinch turn for two points, and got on top after passivity and turned Jeter twice on gut wrenches, with Jeter getting a reversal. In the second period, Jeter threw Ahmadli to his back for four and almost got the fall. After Ahmadli took injury time for his arm, Jeter hit a last-second headlock. After a scoring change which made it 9-9 for Jeter, and then an Azerbaijan challenge, the final score from the jury was 10-7 for Jeter.

The opponent for Jeter in the 71 kg bronze medal match will be Giorgi Aladashvili of Georgia, a 2022 U15 European champion.

Jordyn Raney, a 2023 U17 World champion, had already qualified for a bronze-medal match at 60 kg, after losing a very close 2-1 bout to Aykhan Javadov of Azerbaijan in Tuesday’s semifinals. His bronze-medal match opponent was determined in repechage, Vadim Matros of Ukraine, a 2022 European U15 champion and 2024 European U17 bronze medalist.

Domenic Munaretto’s run at 51 kg was halted in the repechage, when he lost a 7-1 decision to Sainath Pardhi of India. Pardhi led 3-0 at the break with a passivity point and a turn. In the second period, Munaretto got one point on passivity but scored no turns. A four-point Pardhi body lock closed out the scoring.

Munaretto, a 2022 U17 World champion in freestyle, finished with a 1-2 record in the 2024 U17 Worlds in Greco-Roman.

The USA won a gold medal in Greco-Roman on Tuesday, with Jayden Raney claiming a gold medal at 55 kg, after a 7-5 win over Alpamys Bolatuly of Kazakhstan in the championship finals.

The women’s freestyle competition began on Wednesday, and 2023 U17 World champion Piper Fowler went 1-1 at 73 kg and remains eligible for repechage.

Fowler was on fire in her first match, a quick 12-0 technical fall over Aisanat Kalmamatova of Kyrgyzstan in just 56 seconds. She hit three straight four-point blast double leg takedowns to end the match quickly.

In the quarterfinals, Fowler was defeated by 2024 Asian U17 champion Mansi Lather of India, 6-0. Mansi jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first period, getting two step outs, a spin behind takedown and adding a shot clock point when Fowler did not score in 30 seconds. In the second period, Lather scored the only point on a step out with 19 seconds left.

Mansi must beat Khrystyna Demchuk of Ukraine for Fowler to become eligible for Thursday morning’s repechage. Denchuk is a two-time European U15 champion and was third in the 2024 European U17 Championships. Only losers to finalists can wrestle back for a bronze medal.

The second session on Wednesday will begin at 5:00 p.m. local time, which is 10:00 a.m. Eastern time, and will feature the Group 3 women’s freestyle semifinals. Following at 6:00 p.m. local time, which is 11:00 a.m. Eastern time, is the Group 2 Greco-Roman finals, featuring Raney and Jeter going for bronze.
