LAS VEGAS, Nev. – A pair of past U17 World champions were among the winners at the U17 Greco-Roman Nationals on Thursday, which is the qualifying event for the 2024 U17 World Championships in Amman, Jordan, August 19-25.

The World Team members were determined in a best-of-three championship series between the two finalists.

At 60 kg, 2023 U17 World Greco-Roman champion Jordyn Raney of Union County High School in Kentucky swept his series in two straight matches over Manuel Saldate of Gold Rush Wrestling, a 2013 16U Nationals freestyle runner-up. Raney scored a pair of technical fall victories, winning 9-0 in the first match and 10-0 in the second match. Raney was named Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament for his performance.

2022 U17 World freestyle champion Domenic Munaretto of Illinois qualified for the 2023 Greco-Roman team at 51 kg. He needed all three matches to defeat Arseni Kikiniou of Poway Wrestling, a 2023 U15 Nationals Greco-Roman champion.

Munaretto edged Kininiou, 2-0 to win the first match. Kikiniou hit a clutch arm throw late in the second match for a 7-3 win to force a third bout. Munaretto closed out the victory with a 9-2 win, after jumping to a quick 5-0 lead in the first period.

There will be two Raney twins on the 2023 U17 World Team, as brother Jayden Raney was the champion at 55 kg. Jayden Raney, a 2023 16U Nationals champion in both styles at 113 pounds, beat the 2013 16U Nationals champion at 106 pounds, Saxton Scott of Team Idaho, in two straight matches.

2023 U16 Nationals GR champion Loc Webber of Beast Mode Wrestling swept his championship series at 45 kg over 2024 16U Folkstyle Nationals champion Cason Craft of Threestyle Wrestling of Oklahoma. Webber won a tight 7-5 decision in the opening match, then turned Webber multiple times in an 8-0 technical fall victory in the second match.

At 48 kg, 2023 U16 Nationals Greco-Roman champion Hayden Schwab of Immortal Athletics WC swept his series in two straight over Carter Shin of the Integrity WC. Schwab scored a 7-2 victory in the first match, then secured a pin over Shin in the second match to sweep the series.

In addition to Munaretto’s three-match series at 51 kg, three other championship series needed the full three matches to determine a World Team member.

At 65 kg, Colton Weiler of Askren Wrestling Academy, a 2023 16U Nationals Greco-Roman runner-up, won the rubber match to defeat 2023 16U Nationals Greco-Roman champion Wyatt Medlin of the Illinois RTC.

Weiler opened up the series with a 10-1 technical fall over Medlin. In bout two, Medlin scored a takedown in the closing moments of the match for a 3-3 criteria decision over Weiler. In a heated third match, Medlin jumped to a 4-0 lead, but Weiler received a key caution and two-point penalty against Medlin late in the match for the 6-4 victory.

At 71 kg, Joseph Jeter of the Husky WC in Oklahoma won the series two matches to one over Jacob Herm of Neenah High School in Wisconsin. The winner of each match was dominant. Jeter scored a pin over Herm in 1:47 in match one. Herm rebounded with a 9-0 technical fall over Jeter. In the deciding match, Jeter scored the last eight points for a 15-6 technical fall victory.

2022 U17 Nationals runner-up Trayvn Boger of the Sanderson Wrestling Academy claimed the 110 kg berth with a victory over Kai Calcutt of the Relentless Training Center, a 2023 16U Nationals runner-up. Boger scored a pin in 3:31 over Calcutt in the opening bout, but Calcutt was dominant from the start for a 9-1 technical fall victory in match two. In the deciding match, Boger hit some big moves on the way to a 13-8 decision.

The other two World Team members are Emmitt Sherlock of the HeadHunters WC at 80 kg and Evan McGuire of the Pinnacle WC at 92 kg. Both won their series in two straight matches.

In a battle between 2023 16U Nationals runners-up, Sherlock won the opening bout over Adonis Bonar II of MWC Wrestling Academy in a 9-0 technical fall. The second match was a see-saw battle that went to the end, with Sherlock scoring a late takedown for a 10-9 win.

McGuire was in command of both of his matches, stopping Alexander Smith of the Spartan RTC 8-0 in the first match, then 8-3 in the closing bout.
