Bommarito claims second-straight Beach World Series gold, named UWW Senior Beach World champion

by Richard Immel

MULGA, Turkey – The sensational 2023 beach wrestling run by Michigan native Eliana Bommarito continued this weekend as she locked up the gold medal at the UWW Beach World Series Final with a 3-2 win over Liudmyla Pavlovets Tychyna of Ukraine in the finals—a victory that also pushed her atop the +70 kg Beach World Series rankings at seasons end.

Entering the event ranked No. 11 in the World, Bommarito finished with a perfect 5-0 record on Sarigerme Beach, earning two wins by fall and three by technical superiority. It is her second UWW Beach World Series gold medal in as many events, which extends her U.S. record. No other American owns a single beach wrestling gold medal on the Senior level. She adds the +70 kg Senior Beach World title to the U20 Beach World title she claimed in Constanta, Romania, last month.

The U.S. women wound up in fifth place as a team with 34 points, thanks to Bommarito’s gold and a pair of sixth-place finishes. Newcomer Jennesis Martinez of New Mexico went 1-2 at 50 kg, while Illinois product Isabeau Shalack finished 1-2 at +70 kg, with one of her losses coming at the hands of Bommarito. Shalack entered the weekend at No. 7 in the UWW Beach World Series rankings.

On the men’s side, the U.S. was unable to push one of its five athletes through to the semifinal round on Sunday morning. The group posted a collective record of 1-11 in a deep international field, finishing in seventh place as a team with 24 points.

The lone American win came from New York’s Wayne Lamont at 80 kg as he topped NikitaI Kanevskyi of Ukraine 3-1 in his final group match. He earned a fifth-place finish overall after falling just short of the semifinal stage. It was the highest placement for the U.S. men.

World ranked wrestlers Ty Loethen, No. 5 at 80 kg, and Mitchell Cook, No. 9 at 70 kg, were unable to generate the momentum needed for a medal run in Turkey. Loethen went 0-2 to finish in seventh place at 80 kg. Similarly, Cook dropped all three of his bouts to come in eighth place at 70 kg.

Loethen secured a UWW Senior Beach World bronze medal in the Beach Wrestling World Series overall through the series of five tournaments.

Illinois competitors Justin Benjamin and Gabriel Rangel round out the U.S. efforts for this event. Benjamin dropped a hard-fought, 2-0, contest to Gholamreza Abdollahpour of Iran in the 70 kg knockout round and was unable to progress into the full bracket as a result. He ended the event in 10th place. Rangel went 0-3 to finish in seventh place in the +90 kg division.
