NCWWC Region 1: No. 10 Sacred Heart women claim regional team title, No. 11 Gannon places second

ERIE, Pa. – Led by three individual champions and nine national qualifiers, No. 10 Sacred Heart claimed the team title at the NCWWC Region 1 Championships, held at Gannon University.

Individual champion for Sacred Heart were Aaliyah Payne-Parris (101), Madison Sandquist (155), Jacklyn Smith (191).

Sacred Heart won the team title with 176 points, just 3.5 points ahead of No. 11 Gannon with 172.5 points. No. 9 East Stroudsburg was third with 135.5 points. Sacred Heart did not secure the team title into the last finals match, when Smith defeated Trinity Monaghan of Lock Haven, 6-1 for the 191-pound gold.

Gannon had a pair of individual champions: Lana Perez (136) and Annabelle Helm (170). Gannon matched Sacred Heart with nine national qualifiers.

Individual champions for East Stroudsburg were Emily Klein (116) and Sofia Macaluso (123). Klein won a NCWWC Regional for the second straight year. Sofia Macaluso beat her sister and ESU teammate Mia Macaluso in the 123-pound semifinals, and Mia came back to take third place. ESU earned six qualifiers.

Although placing fifth in the standings, No. 8 Lock Haven had three individual champions: Kaelani Shufeldt (109), Lillian Sherer (130) and Grace Stem (143). All five of Lock Haven’s entries qualified for the NCWWC Nationals.

Eight different teams earned national qualifiers.
