The Pittsburgh WC will host its PWC2 card on Tuesday, January 26, starting at 6:00 p.m. ET live on Rokfin.
The card will feature five interesting Senior-level bouts, including a women’s freestyle match, and a strong card of seven youth match-ups.
The final match will pit two-time NCAA champion Dean Heil against Pittsburgh WC star Luke Pletcher at 67 kg. Heil won two NCAA titles for Oklahoma State, and now competes for the Navy-Marine Corps RTC. Pletcher, an Ohio State star, was considered the top challenger for an NCAA title last year of Ohio State, before the NCAA Tournament was cancelled. He was a 2020 Big Ten champion, and secured All-American honors in both 2018 and 2019. Both wrestlers have been very active competing on wrestling cards this season.
The women’s match is a showdown of two Olympic hopefuls, as two-time World Team member Victoria Francis will take on 2020 U23 Nationals champion and 2019 Senior Nationals runner-up Dymond Guilford at 78 kg. Both of these stars will also be competing in the Captains’ Cup in October, with Francis serving as captain of one of the teams. Guilford was the No. 1 pick in the Captains' Cup draft on Saturday, selected by Team Mensah-Stock.
An intriguing battle at 79 kg in men’s freestyle features Evan Wick of the Titan Mercury WC against Chance Martseller. Wick, an All-American for Wisconsin who it taking the college season off to compete freestyle this year, was a 2020 U23 Nationals champion, and has twice placed fourth at the Senior Nationals. Marsteller, an All-American for Lock Haven, was a 2019 Senior Nationals runner-up and a past University Nationals champion.
An international bout at 120 kg features Demetrius Thomas of the Pittsburgh WC against Max Lacey, a World Team member for Costa Rica. Thomas was a two-time ACC champion and two-time NCAA qualifier for Pitt, whose senior season was cut short when the 2020 NCAAs were cancelled. Thomas was also an NAIA champion for Williams Baptist. Lacey placed second in the 2020 Pan American Championships at 92 kg for Costa Rica and was seventh in the 2019 Pan American Games at 97 kg. Lacey wrestled for Wheeling University, and is currently head assistant coach at West Liberty.
Another battle at 75 kg will pit Ronnie Perry, an NCAA runner-up for Lock Haven, against Quentin Perez, a three-time NCAA qualifier for Campbell who is currently with the Navy-Marine Corps RTC. Perry made a memorable run to the 2018 NCAA finals for Lock Haven, and is currently the women’s wrestling coach at his alma-mater. Perez was named an Honorable Mention NWCA All-American for Campbell, after his senior season ended with the 2020 NCAA Tournament cancelled.
Pletcher competed in PWC1 on December 22, securing a win in the Main Event over David Habat of Slovenia, an NCAA finalist for Edinboro. Thomas also wrestled in PWC1, dropping his match to Isaac Reid.
The PWC card will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the seven youth matches, followed by the five Senior bout, live on the Pittsburgh Wrestling Club’s Rokfin channel.
