PITTSBURGH—The No. 15 University of Pittsburgh wrestling team fell to No. 14 North Carolina on Friday evening at the Fitzgerald Field House by a 23-12 scoreline.
The Panthers (3-3, 1-3 ACC) honored six graduating seniors prior to the match, which marked Pitt’s final home contest of the abbreviated college wrestling regular season.
The Tar Heels (3-2, 2-2 ACC) won six of the evening’s bouts and benefited from two bonus-point wins that boosted the result in their favor.
The night’s marquee matchup – a contest between No. 9 Kennedy Monday and No. 11 Jake Wentzel at 165 pounds – did go Pitt’s way, with Wentzel scoring a 10-6 decision in an extremely entertaining bout. Wentzel has now defeated three of the nation’s top 15 wrestlers in his weight class this season.
Two other ranked Panthers, No. 4 Micky Phillippi at 133 pounds and No. 7 Nino Bonaccorsi at 197, scored solid decisions, while 125-pounder Colton Camacho also recorded an impressive win as well.
“Really happy with Jake’s performance,” Pitt head coach Keith Gavin said of Wentzel. “That’s another big win for him. He wrestled hard out of some tough positions and battled until the end to win that. Colton continues to improve and we’re pleased with that. But we are conceding too many bonus points and that makes a huge difference in duals.”
The Panthers conclude the regular season at No. 8 Virginia Tech next Friday with a dual meet on the road in Blacksburg that will be featured on the ACC Network at 6 p.m.
