Two of the nation's top young college wrestlers, who were taking redshirt years as freshmen, met in the consolation semifinals of the Dave Schultz Memorial International in Colorado Springs, Colo. in March 2019.
David Carr, who attends Iowa State, and Sammy Sasso, who attends Ohio State, were battling for a chance to win a medal at this major Senior international tournament at 70 kg.
Rather than discuss the outcome of this battle, let's talk about their success afterwards. Carr went on to make the U.S. Junior World Team and won a Junior World gold medal for the USA in freestyle. As freshmen during the 2019-20 season, Sasso earned the No. 3 seed at 149 pounds at the NCAAs with a 24-3 record. Carr was the No. 3 seed at 157 pounds at NCAAs with an 18-1 record.
