Match of the Day: Jenna Burkert dominates World bronze medalist Michelle Fazzari
by USA Wrestling
In November 2013, a team composed of U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers took on a team of Russians in a dual meet dubbed, “The Resurrection vs. Russia” in Clifton Park, New York. Prior to the dual, two women’s freestyle exhibition matches took place.
Despite Team USA falling to the Russians, Jenna Burkert did everything she could to set the stage for the dual, dismantling Michelle Fazzari, a 2012 Canadian World Team member. At the time, Burkert was a three-time Junior World Team member (2011, 2012 and 2013) and had placed fifth at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
Fazzari would go on to make Canadian World Teams in 2014, 2015 and 2017, earning a bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships in Paris, France. Burkert earned a spot on the 2014 U.S. Senior World Team as well. She went on to make the 2018 and 2019 World Teams and is currently ranked No. 1 in the U.S. at 57 kg.
