Today, July 23, is exactly one year prior to the start of the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, which will begin July 23, 2021. The event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and rescheduled almost exactly one year after it was scheduled to take place.
At this point, the United States has competed in two of the three stages of Olympic qualifying, and has qualified 15 of the 18 weight classes for the Olympic Games. Included are all six women’s freestyle weight classes, five of the six men’s freestyle weight classes and four of the six Greco-Roman weight classes. There is one more chance to qualify the three weight classes remaining in Bulgaria in late April 2021.
The USA Wrestling schedule for 2021 has not yet been announced, but the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling is expected to be held at about the same time as schedule in 2020, early April. Most of the qualification for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials has been completed. However, the appropriate Sport Committees have not determined if there will be any changes in this qualification system because of the COVID-19 postponements.
In total, there are now 165 athletes qualified for the Olympic Trials, 53 in men’s freestyle, 53 in women’s freestyle and 59 in Greco-Roman.
In honor of the #OneYearOut, we look at some key achievements of athletes who have already qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. This list will be expanded in the future to include more event achievements. Enjoy.
