There’s a new No. 1 at 149 pounds, a shakeup in the top 10 of a couple other weights and another week of movement near the top of the team standings in the latest edition of the Trackwrestling Division I Rankings presented by Resilite.
Oklahoma State’s Boo Lewallen remained unbeaten with a pair of victories on the weekend and surged to the top spot at 149 while the rest of the top five got reshuffled in the wake of a couple marquee matchups at the weight. Ohio State’s Sammy Sasso climbed four notches to No. 2 after knocking off previous-No. 1 Pat Lugo of Iowa and Minnesota’s Brayton Lee.
Lewallen’s climb coupled with Travis Wittlake’s move up the rankings at 165 vaulted Oklahoma State back into the top 10 in the team standings.
Iowa continues to hold a big lead over the rest of the pack. The top-ranked Hawkeyes check in this week with 133 projected placement and advancement points for the NCAA Championships. Penn State is second with 78.5, followed by Ohio State (71.5), Minnesota (54.5), Wisconsin (52.5), Arizona State (52), Oklahoma State (50), Nebraska (41.5), Northwestern (40) and Princeton (38.5).
The Trackwrestling team rankings are based strictly on the number of advancement and placement points each squad would accumulate if its wrestlers finished in those ranking slots at the NCAA Championships. Top-ranked wrestlers earn 20 points, followed by 16 for second, 13.5 for third, 12.5 for fourth, 10 for fifth, 9 for sixth, 6.5 for seventh, 5.5 for eighth, 2 for spots 9-12, 1.5 for spots 13-16 and 1 for 17-25. Team dual outcomes are not factored into the team rankings.
The Trackwrestling rankings go out to 33, representing the number of wrestlers who will qualify for the NCAA Championships at each weight class.
The rankings are coordinated by David Mirikitani and Mark Ostrander.
