GOTZIS, Austria - A team of age-group U.S. Greco-Roman athletes competed in the respected Austria Junior Open on Saturday, bringing home some hardware and great experience.

2019 Junior Pan Am bronze medalist Benji Peak of NMU-OTS won the gold medal at 63 kg with a 4-0 record. Peak previously won this tournament in 2018.

Payton Jacobson, a high school wrestler from Wisconsin with the Topper WC, won the gold at 60 kg with a 4-1 record. He avenged an early loss by defeating the same athlete in the finals.

Another U.S. gold came at 67 kg, with NMU-OTS wrestler Jakob Murillo finishing with a 3-1 record and the gold medal.

"Over all, I was very impressed with the guys and their effort. The guys with the most investment had the most success. With the coming week of training, we have a great chance to add to that investment," said Lucas Steldt, coach of the American wrestlers.

Steldt on the champions

Payton Jacobson.

"Payton was a little behind the speed of the experienced juniors. By the second and third match he was acclimated and looking really good. Like a seasoned junior. In the last two matches he broke both his opponents to take the wins. In the semi finals he locked up a beautiful trapped arm body lock to end the match."

Benji Peak

"He won gold. Looked dominant. This kid has potential."

Jakob Murillo

"This kid has a ton of talent. I was very impressed with him. This kid you’ll hear more about."

Updated results will be posted if received.
