There’s turnover atop three weight classes in the latest edition of the Trackwrestling Division I Rankings presented by Resilite.
Penn State’s Roman Bravo-Young (133), Ohio State’s Sammy Sasso (149) and Iowa’s Michael Kemerer (174) surged to the top of their respective weight classes this week.
Bravo-Young grabbed the No. 1 spot at 133 pounds in the wake of his injury default victory Friday against Iowa’s Austin DeSanto. The undefeated Penn State sophomore supplanted Wisconsin’s Seth Gross, who split a pair of matches with DeSanto in December.
Sasso seized the top ranking in the tangled web of 149-pounders after a recent hot stretch coupled with previous No. 1 Boo Lewallen’s loss to Brock Mauller.
Kemerer traded places with Mark Hall after toppling the NCAA champ from Penn State 11-6 on Friday. His move to the No. 1 spot helped Iowa maintain a sizeable lead over the rest of the pack in this week’s team standings.
The Hawkeyes check in with 130 projected NCAA placement and advancement points. Penn State is second with 85.5, followed by Ohio State (75.5), Arizona State (52.5), Minnesota (51.5), Wisconsin (46.5), Oklahoma State (45.5), Northwestern (43.5), Princeton (38.5) and Nebraska (37).
The Trackwrestling team rankings are based strictly on the number of advancement and placement points each squad would accumulate if its wrestlers finished in those ranking slots at the NCAA Championships. Top-ranked wrestlers earn 20 points, followed by 16 for second, 13.5 for third, 12.5 for fourth, 10 for fifth, 9 for sixth, 6.5 for seventh, 5.5 for eighth, 2 for spots 9-12, 1.5 for spots 13-16 and 1 for 17-25. Team dual outcomes are not factored into the team rankings.
The Trackwrestling rankings go out to 33, representing the number of wrestlers who will qualify for the NCAA Championships at each weight class.
The rankings are coordinated by David Mirikitani and Mark Ostrander.
