Match of the Day: Gable Steveson defeats Jordan Wood in the 2017 UWW Junior Nationals finals
by USA Wrestling
Gable Steveson and Jordan Wood, two of the top age-group level heavyweights in the World, squared off in the 2017 UWW Junior Nationals finals. Steveson had won the past two Cadet World Championships and was moving up into the Junior division despite still being Cadet eligible. Wood was a 2014 Cadet World silver medalist and the 2016 Junior World Team member.
The pair would meet again a month later at the Junior World Team Trials, where Steveson would win two matches to none. Gable won gold later that summer at the Junior World Championships in Tampere, Finland.
Currently, Steveson is No. 2 on the National Team at 125 kg. As a true freshman, he placed third at the NCAA tournament for Minnesota. Last season, he went into the NCAA tournament as the undefeated No. 1 seed.
After injury defaulting in the round of 12 as a freshman, Wood placed fourth at the 2019 NCAA Tournament for Lehigh. Last season, Wood went 17-5 and earned the No. 9 seed.
