Tokyo watch for Friday: Japan takes lead with seven Olympic qualifiers, including five of the six women’s spots

NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan – USA Wrestling is keeping a running score of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic qualification process, as the 2019 World Championships continue in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan this week.

The 2019 World Championships serves as the first qualifying event for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan in the 18 Olympic weight classes. The top six place winners in each of the Olympic weights will qualify their nation for the Olympic Games at that weight.

On Friday, there were four Olympic weight classes completed, two in men’s freestyle and two in women’s freestyle.
The women’s weights are 62 kg/136.5 lbs. and 68 kg/149.75 lbs The men’s weight classes are 57 kg/125.5 lbs. and 76 kg/167.5 lbs

For the 10 Olympic weight classes completed by Thursday (6 in Greco-Roman and 6 in women’s freestyle and 2 in men’s freestyle), leading the qualifier count is Japan, which so far has five women’s berths, one Greco-Roman berth and one men’s freestyle berth. Right behind them are Kazakhstan and Russia with six qualifiers.

Women’s freestyle concluded today, and Japan led all nations in women’s Olympic berths with five. China was in second with four Olympic qualifications.

The first two men’s freestyle weight classes were completed. Three nations qualified for the Olympics in both weight classes, India, Kazakhstan and Russia.

Saturday is the conclusion of two more men’s freestyle Olympic weight classes, 74 kg/163 lbs. and 125 kg/275 lbs. in men’s freestyle.
