The US Center for SafeSport revised the old ‘Proactive Policies” into the new Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policy (MAAPP). USA Wrestling has made changes to our Safe Sport Policy accordingly, and those were approved by the Board on April 27.
A copy of those policies are in Article II of the USA Wrestling Safe Sport Handbook, and at takedownmisconduct.com.
The most immediate change is that all athletes 18 and older (or turning 18 prior to 8/31/20) must take the US Center for SafeSport training. It is free with their USA Wrestling membership.
Those athletes currently 17 years-old, but turning 18 prior to 8/31/20, must get parental consent to take the training (this consent will be prompted when you login to the membership site).
Any athlete not in compliance may be denied access to USA Wrestling sanctioned events, and all affected athletes will need to be complete SafeSport training in advance to compete.
Additional Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention policies deal with One on One contact; Social Media; Locker Rooms; Travel; and Overnight Lodging. These policies are intended to supplement the Safe Sport Code, and are integral to USA Wrestling’s commitment to providing the safest possible environment for our athletes.
USA Wrestling strongly encourages all coaches, officials, administrators, and parents to be familiar with the Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies.
Reporting of suspected violations may be made to your State Safe Sport Coordinator, or to safesportdirector@usawrestling.org.
