Miller is seventh in Greco-Roman at 97 kg on final day of CISM Military World Games in China
WUHAN, China – Cpt. Daniel Miller (Camp Lejeune, N.C./U.S. Marine Corps) placed seventh at 97 kg/211.5 lbs., the top U.S. effort in Greco-Roman on the final day of the wrestling action at the 7th CISM Military World Games on Thursday. The CISM Military World Games is a multi-sport event featuring the world’s top military athletes.
Miller finished with a 1-1 record for the tournament. He opened with a 6-0 victory over Islam Umayev of Kazakhstan, who was fifth in the 2018 Junior Worlds. In the next round, Miller was edged by 2014 World silver medalist and 2014 CISM World Military champion Oliver Hassler of Germany, 2-1. When Hassler was defeated in the semifinals by World champion Musa Evloev of Russia, Miller became ineligible for the repechage.
Miller was competing in his first CISM Military World Games, and was seventh in Greco-Roman at the 2017 CISM Military World Wrestling Championships. Miller was a 2018 U.S. Open champion.
The other U.S. athlete competing on Thursday, 1LT Toby Erickson (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) dropped his opening bout. He was edged by Pavel Rudakou of Belarus, 4-3. Rudakou was a two-time European Junior bronze medalist. When Rudakou was defeated in the quarterfinals and failed to reach the gold-medal round, Erickson was not eligible for repechage.
Over the four day tournament, the United States won three wrestling medals, one in each style. SSG Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) won a silver medal at 50 kg/105.5 lbs. in women’s freestyle on Tuesday. SGT Ildar Hafizov (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) won a bronze medal at 60 kg/132 lbs. in Greco-Roman on Wednesday. SSG Max Nowry (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) won a bronze medal at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. in men’s freestyle on Monday.
The tournament was loaded with past Olympic and World medalists. Russia won the most wrestling medals with 12, including five gold-medalists. Host China and North Korea were next with six medals.
