U.S. wins U15 Pan American women’s freestyle title, with seven champions and 11 medals

PANAMA CITY, Panama – The United States won seven individual titles and 11 medals in women’s freestyle at the U15 Pan American Championships on Saturday.
The USA won the team standings in women’s freestyle with 175 points, with Panama in second with 107 points and Colombia in third with 86 points. There were 11 nations in the tournament.
Leading the way for the USA was Katie Gomez of Van Nuys, Calif., who won the 54 kg gold medal and was awarded the Golden Boot as the Outstanding Wrestler of the women’s division. Gomez won all of her four matches with dominance, securing two pins and two technical falls.
Other U.S. athletes winning individual gold medals were:
• Elizabeth Brunson of Henderson, Nev. at 33 kg
• Angie Dill of Eagle Bridge, N.Y. at 36 kg
• Audrey Jimenez of Tucson, Ariz. at 39 kg
• Rianne Murphy of Valparaiso, Ind. at 42 kg
• Haley Ward of Buckner, Mo. at 62 kg
• Ella Pagel of Nerstrand, Minn. at 66 kg
Capturing a silver medal at 58 kg was Savannah Cosme of Denver, Colo. Bronze medals went to Angie Dill of Eagle Bridge, N.Y. at 39 kg, Zao Estrada of Parker, Colo. at 46 kg and Faith Cole, Pacific, Mo. at 50 kg. Dill won an uncontested gold medal at 36 kg and a bronze medal at 39 kg.
The U.S. women went 25-7 for the day, earning bonus point victories in 22 of their bouts. Included were 13 pins.
“We had a great U.S. team here at the U15 Pan Ams. It is a great, hard-working group of girls who were focused and determined. I feel this team has great talent and is definitely a team for the future. I am really proud of them. They did a great job as a team,” said U.S. coach Mike Duran.
The U15 Pan American Championships conclude on Sunday with the men’s freestyle competition. The USA won nine gold medals with their nine athletes in the Greco-Roman tournament on Friday, and all nine will also compete in the freestyle tournament. This group won the team title in Greco-Roman and will seed to claim another team title on Sunday.
