by Mike Willis, USA Wrestling
Returning World silver medalist Richard Figueroa will be competing this weekend in Akron
This weekend, the 2019 UWW Men’s Freestyle and Greco-Roman Cadet World Team Trials will take place in Akron, Ohio. The winners of these tournaments will represent Team USA at the 2019 Cadet World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, this July. While there is onsite/late registration on Thursday, there is already a significant list of highly credentialed young wrestlers signed up to compete.
Cadet MFS 41-45 kg
2018 World Team member: Chance Lamer
88 pound 2018 Fargo finalists, Mason Gehloff and Jore Volk are both registered in this weight class. Gehloff defeated Volk in Fargo, 8-1, to claim the title.
Cadet MFS 48 kg
2018 World Team member: Richard Figueroa
Stevo Poulin finished third in Akron last year. He will be looking to improve upon his 2018 result in order to make his first World Team. Another stud in this weight class is Eli Griffin. Griffin took third at Fargo and gave Poulin a tough match in the consolation rounds in Akron last year, losing 13-11.
Cadet MFS 51 kg
2018 World Team member: Matthew Ramos
Last year’s World Team member Matthew Ramos won a Cadet World title. This year, Richie Figueroa, a 2018 Cadet World silver medalist at 48 kg, will move up a weight class and attempt to replicate Ramos’s success. Figueroa, a California native, will be challenged by another Golden State wrestler, Joey Cruz. Cruz defeated Figueroa at FloNationals, 5-2, this April. In 2018, Figueroa defeated Cruz at FloNationals, 3-2. This bracket is loaded and also features Fargo Champions, Drake Ayala and Jordan Williams.
Cadet MFS 55 kg
2018 World Team member: Robert Howard
Robert Howard will be looking to make his third World Team and stake his claim for the second year in a row as Team USA’s representative at 55 kg. He will have to navigate an extremely deep field to do so including, 2018 Cadet World Team member at 45 kg, Chance Lamer, 2018 Cadet Greco-Roman World Team member and freestyle Fargo champion, Jakason Burks and 2018 Fargo champions Jesse Ybarra and Nicolar Rivera.
Cadet MFS 60 kg
2018 World Team member: Josh Saunders
60 kg will feature four Fargo champions in Dominick Serrano, Josh Edmond, Ryan Sokol, and Carter Young. In addition to these hammers, fans will also get to see Fargo runner-ups, Mick Burnett, Daniel Cardenas, Ryan Franco, and Akron runner-ups, Anthony Ferrari and Isaac Salas. Also at this weight is No. 2 in the nation, (per Flowrestling) Shayne Van Ness.
Cadet MFS 65 kg
2018 World Team member: Carson Manville
Fargo runner-up Luke Geog, and FloNationals champion Joey Zargo headline 65 kg. However, this is a deep weight class where any number of wrestlers could make a run to the finals without it being truly surprising.
Cadet MFS 71 kg:
2018 World Team member: Alex Facundo
After a bronze medal performance at the 2018 Cadet World Champions, Alex Facundo is back and looking to make his second team for another shot at taking gold. His stiffest competition could come from Fargo Champion, Trevor Mastrogiovanni.
Cadet MFS 80 kg
2018 World Team member: Abe Assad
Fargo champion, Quayin Short is the frontrunner at 80 kg. He will be pushed by Fargo runner up, Connor O’Neill, and FloNationals champion, Clayton Ulrey.
Cadet MFS 92 kg
2018 World Team member: AJ Ferrari
The 92 kg bracket will have two Fargo champions in Rocky Elam and Noah Pettigrew. Elam’s older brother, Zach, was a Junior World silver medalist at 97 kg. Also at this weight class is FloNationals champion Silas Allred, and Fargo runner-ups, Nathan Haas and Kolby Franklin.
Cadet MFS 110 kg
2018 World Team member: Daniel Kerkvliet
Hunter Catka finished as a runner-up at this tournament last year and will be looking to get over the hump to make his first World Team. He will be challenged Braxton Mikesell who took third at FloNationals.
Cadet GR 41-45 kg
2018 World Team member: Cale Anderson
Mason Gehloff was a double Fargo champion last year and could be considered the favorite in Greco-Roman and men’s freestyle. Another Fargo champion, Kaden Ramos is in the bracket, as well as Fargo runner-up, Daniel Sheen.
Cadet GR 48 kg
2018 World Team member: Brendan Chaowanapibool
The frontrunners at this weight class will be Caleb Coyle who placed fourth at Fargo, and Sefton Douglass, who took fifth. Coyle defeated Douglass, 11-1, in the consolation semifinals.
Cadet GR 51 kg
2018 World Team member: Jakason Burks
51 kg features two Fargo champions, Kenndyl Mobley and Sheldon Seymour. Mobley took home a title at 100 pounds, while Seymour won it all at 106 pounds.
Cadet GR 55 kg
2018 World Team member: Hunter Lewis
Two Fargo runner-ups, Conor Knopick and Joey Cape, have the best finishes in a field filled with numerous All-Americans. Another wrestler to keep an eye on is U15 Pan American champion and Kids Nationals champion, Brennan Van Hoecke.
Cadet GR 60 kg
2018 World Team member: Phillip Moomey
60 kg is another weight class headlined by a pair of Fargo champs. Parker Decker won a title competing at 113 pounds, and Haiden Drury won at 120 pounds. Decker took second at Akron two years ago and fifth last year, while Drury took third at Akron last year.
Cadet GR 65 kg
2018 World Team member: Dominic Damon
Robert Perez III is the sole Fargo champ competing at 65 kg. Fargo runner-up at 126 pounds Vincent Zerban, has bumped up several weight classes for this tournament. Also in this bracket are Fargo fourth place finishers, Aaden Valdez and Matthew Singleton.
Cadet GR 71 kg
2018 World Team member: James Burks
138 pound Fargo champion, Brayden Roberts will be competing at 71 kg. Another to watch in the field is two-time Fargo All-American John Martin Best, who has placed third and fourth.
Cadet GR 80 kg
2018 World Team Member: Jonathon Fagen
One Fargo champion and a trio of third-placers will wrestle their way through the 80 kg bracket. Adrien Cramer won the 160 pound weight class last summer, pinning Jack Darrah (also in this bracket) in the quarterfinals in: 22 seconds. Darrah would battle back to take third. Darwin Hull, who took third at 170, and Tate Picklo, who took third at 152, are also in the bracket.
Cadet GR 92 kg
2018 World Team Member: Jacob Kaminski
92 kg is another deep weight class, featuring the Fargo champions and second-place finishers at 182 and 195 pounds. The champions are Kolby Franklin (195) and Tyler Hannah (182). Brandon Hoselton (195) and Kyle Haas (182) finished second.
Cadet GR 110 kg
2018 World Team member: Luke Luffman
In a relatively small 110 kg bracket, Fargo champion, Braxton Mikesell should be considered the favorite. Other Fargo placers, Daniel Striggow (4th) and Chris Island (7th) are also in the bracket.
