Snyder wins gold, Golston gets silver, Conder and Hildebrandt take bronze at the Dan Kolov International

RUSE, Bulgaria –Team USA added four more medals, including a gold medal from 2016 Olympic champion and two-time World champion Kyle Snyder (Columbus, Ohio/TMWC/Ohio RTC) at 97 kg/213 lbs., during the final session at the Dan Kolov International, a UWW Ranking Tournament on Sunday.
Snyder controlled the action to defeat 2012 Olympic silver medalist Valerii Andriitsev of Ukraine in the finals, 4-0. All four of the points were secured on step outs, and Andriitsev was never close to securing a successful offensive move.
Snyder won three bouts on Saturday to reach the finals. He opened with a 12-2 technical fall over 2017 U23 World medalist Ty Walz of the USA, then stopped Murazi Mchedlidze of Ukraine, 8-5. In the semifinals, he dominated Baki Sahin of Turkey in an 11-0 technical fall.
Claiming a silver medal for the USA at 50 kg/110 lbs. was Erin Golston (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC/OTC), who dropped a 4-1 decision in the finals to 2014 World silver medalist and 2006 World bronze medalist Iwona Matkowska of Poland. Matkowska scored the only takedown of the bout in the first period, and added two points when Golston was put on the shot clock twice and did not score.
Golston, who is No. 3 on the Women’s National Team, had four wins on the way to the finals, including victories over the two U.S. women who are ahead of her in the ranking. In her opening bout, she stopped No. 1 Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP), 3-1. In the semifinals, she defeated No. 2 Victoria Anthony (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids), 2-1.
Conder and Anthony met in one of the bronze-medal bouts at 50 kg. Conder continued her edge over Anthony, winning by a 4-0 margin. Conder secured the only takedown of the match, and picked up two other points on stepouts.
There was another all-USA bronze medal match in the women’s freestyle event, as 2018 World silver medalist Sarah Hildebrandt (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC/OTC) defeated Amy Fearnside (Colorado Springs, Colo./TMWC/OTC), 6-4 at 53 kg/117 lbs. Hildebrandt scored three takedowns to build a 6-0 lead, but Fearnside hit a four-point takedown late in the second period to tighten up the margin.
Overall, for the four-day event, the USA won 12 medals. Joining Snyder as gold medalists were 2012 Olympic champion and four-time World champion Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Nebraska WTC) at 74 kg/163 lbs., 2018 World bronze medalist Tamrya Mensah-Stock (Colorado Springs, Colo./TMWC/OTC) at 68 kg/149.5 lbs. and Alex Dieringer (Stillwater, Okla./TMWC/Cowboy RTC), at 79 kg/174 lbs.
Joining Golston as a silver medalist was Jordan Oliver (Ithaca, N.Y./Sunkist Kids/Finger Lakes RTC) at 65 kg/143 lbs. at 65 kg/143,
Bronze medals went to Conder and Hildebrandt, plus two-time World medalist James Green (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids/Nebraska WTC) at 70 kg/154 lbs., Bernard Futrell (Philadelphia, Pa./TMWC/Pennsylvania RTC) at 65 kg/143 lbs., Michael Macchiavello (Raleigh, N.C./Wolfpack RTC) at 92 kg/202.5 lbs. and 2018 World Team member Forrest Molinari (Iowa City, Iowa/TMWC/Hawkeye WC) at 65 kg/143 lbs.
UWW Ranking Tournaments help determine the top four seeded wrestlers in each weight class at the 2019 World Championships in Kazakhstan. Athletes who place in the top five in each weight class in a Ranking Tournament score points in the series.
