RUSE, Bulgaria – Two U.S. women were successful in their repechage bouts, advancing to bronze-medal bouts on Sunday at the Dan Kolov International, a UWW Ranking Tournament.
Four-time U.S. World Team member Whitney Conder won two repechage matches to advance at 50 kg. Both of her wins were by technical fall, stopping Emilia Ciricu-Budeanu of Moldova, 10-0 and Nada Mohamed of Egypt, 12-2.
Her bronze-medal bout will be against another American, two-time World Team member Victoria Anthony (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids). This will be a rematch of 2018 Final X, won by Conder.
At 53 kg/117 lbs., Amy Fearnside (Colorado Springs, Colo./TMWC/OTC) won her repechage bout, securing a 12-2 technical fall over Aktenge Keunimjaeva of Uzbekistan. Her bronze-medal bout will also be against another American, 2018 World silver medalist Sarah Hildebrandt (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC/OTC).
Four U.S. men freestyle wrestlers were beaten in repechage, and did not advance to the medal round. 2018 World silver medalist Zhiwei Deng of China beat two U.S. athletes in the repechage at 125 kg/275.5 lbs., first stopping Michael Kosoy (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids WC), 4-1, then beating two-time World bronze medalist Nick Gwiazdowski (Raleigh, N.C./TMWC/Wolfpack WC), 7-5.
In the match against Gwiazdowski, Deng trailed 5-4 but was able to secure a winning takedown with just a few seconds on the clock, making it 6-5. The USA challenged the call, which was denied, giving an extra point to Deng for the 7-5 decision.
Gwiazdowski lost to Deng 5-4 in his second bout at the 2018 World Championships, when Deng went on to win the World silver medal and Gwiazdowski rebounded to claim a bronze medal.
Six U.S. wrestlers will compete in four medal matches later today. 2016 Olympic champion and two-time World champion Kyle Snyder (Columbus, Ohio/TMWC/Ohio RTC) at 97 kg/213.5 lbs. in men’s freestyle and Erin Golston (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC/OTC) at 50 kg/110 lbs. in women’s freestyle are battling for gold.
They have started the medal rounds ahead of schedule, which is streaming live as we speak on FloWrestling.
