COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The final day of wrestling at the 2019 Dave Schultz Memorial featured seven freestyle weight classes.

A powerful mix of veteran stars and young talents were on display, setting up an exciting gold-medal finals on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. (a schedule change earlier in the day).

Headlining the youth movement was Penn State commit Aaron Brooks of the Titan Mercury WC, who competes for the Elite Accelerator Program (EAP) at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Brooks, a 2018 Junior World silver medalist and 2017 Cadet World champion, reached the finals after scoring a pin on a funky tilt over Stacey Davis of the Wolfpack WC in 1:10. Brooks will face tough Nathan Jackson of the New York AC in the finals.

Nathan Jackson (NYAC) dec. Cj Brucki (NJRTC), 6-5

Among the veterans advancing to the finals was 2016 Olympian Frank Molinaro of Titan Mercury WC, who needed every trick in his bag to edge unattached Iowa State freshman David Carr, 9-8 in the 70 kg semifinals. Carr is a 2016 Cadet World bronze medalist with exceptional freestyle skills.

Carr led 2-0, with Molinaro charging back with a stepout and takedown to lead 3-2. Carr answered with a takedown for a one-point lead, but Molinaro nailed a four-point takedown to secure a 7-4 lead at the break. Carr came back in the second period with a takedown to close it to 7-6. In the key scramble of the match, Molinaro scored a point on a stepout, but Carr challenged. Officials confirmed the stepout, and Molinaro got the extra point on a failed challenge to lead 9-6. A late Carr takedown closed it to 9-8, but he was unable to turn Molinaro nor get a last second takedown, giving the Olympian the win.

2017 U23 World champion Richie Lewis of the New York AC advanced to the finals at 74 kg with a 7-1 win over Joey Lavallee of the Titan Mercury WC, 7-1. He draws veteran Dan Vallimont in the finals.

2012 Junior World silver medalist Pat Downey is an 86 kg finalist, were he has drawn Kenneth Courts of the Titan Mercury WC in the finals. Downey beat Brett Pfarr of the Minnesota Storm 7-4 in his semifinal.

2017 U23 World bronze medalist Ty Walz of the Titan Mercury WC at 97 kg won his semifinal by technical fall over Naoyuki Miyahara of Japan, 11-0. Walz will battle Blaize Cabell of the Titan Mercury WC in the final.

One of the upsets in the semifinals was from Michael Kosoy of the Sunkist Kids, who edged 2009 Junior World champion and three-time Schultz Memorial champion Dom Bradley, 8-6. Kosoy draws Finland’s Jere Heino in the finals.

Joining Brooks as an EAP athlete in the medal round is D.J. Shannon, who will battle C.J. Brucki of the NJRTC for the bronze medal at 79 kg.

The entire Dave Schultz Memorial International is being broadcast live on FloWrestling. Don’t miss the finals at 2:00 p.m. Mountain Time.
