COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The USA had a good start in the men’s freestyle competition at the 21st Dave Schultz Memorial International on Friday, winning gold medals in two of the three weight classes contested.

Both of the U.S. champions on Friday scored dominant technical fall wins in the gold-medal match, Cody Brewer of the Titan Mercury WC/Chicago RTC at 61 kg and B.J. Futrell of the Titan Mercury WC/Pennsylvania RTC at 65 kg.

Brewer, a past NCAA champion for Oklahoma, opened up his offensive with a 10-0 technical fall over Samat Nadyrbek Uulu of Kyrgyzstan in the finals. Brewer scored technical falls in all four of his bouts, outscoring the opposition 41-1.

Futrell, who is coming back after missing last season with injury, was equally dominant, winning all four of his bouts by technical fall and outscoring the opposition, 42-0. His finals victim was Evan Henderson of the NYC RTC, who he beat 10-0 in 1:36.

Among Futrell’s wins was a 12-1 technical fall in the semifinals over two-time NCAA runner-up Bryce Meredith of GRIT Athletics WC.

The other finals on Friday featured a pair of international opponents at 57 kg, when Anatolii Buruian of Moldova overcame a slow start to get his offense untracked in a 14-4 technical fall over Steven Takahashi of Canada in the finals.

Three members of the Elite Accelerator Program, who train fulltime at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, competed on Friday. Julian Tagg, an Ohio native who is in high school, wrestled all the way through the consolation finals at 57 kg, where he lost to past NCAA champion Darian Cruz of the New York AC, 4-1. He finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.

His brother Gabriel Tagg finished the tournament with a 1-2 record at 61kg, and EAP teammate Jacob Greenwood finished 0-2 at 61 kg. Gabriel Tagg beat Greenwood, 17-15 in a wild consolation match.

Wrestling fans were excited about the effort of Colorado high school senior Andrew Alirez of the Northern Colorado WC, who placed fourth at 65 kg. Alirez lost two matches to talented Bryce Meredith, the bronze medalist, one this morning and the other in the bronze medal round. In his consolation semifinals win, Alirez defeated two-time NCAA champion Dean Heil of the Titan Mercury WC, 12-4

The men’s freestyle competition concludes on Saturday, with the final seven weight classes: 70 kg, 74 kg, 79 kg, 86 kg, 92 kg, 97 kg, 125 kg.

Session times on Saturday are 9:30 a.m. for preliminaries, with the medal-match finals at 2:00 p.m., which is a schedule change and is earlier than announced.
