Two-time World bronze medalist Nick Gwiazdowski (Raleigh, N.C./Titan Mercury WC/Wolfpack RTC) extended his unbeaten record to 4-0 in the Deutsche Ringerliga (DRL), a Gerrman professional wrestling league, with a victory at 130 kg on Saturday night.

Gwiazdowski, competing for his KSV Ispringen team, defeated a Russian, Magomedgadzi Nurasulov of the Germania Weingarten team, 5-4. Nurasulov was a 2012 Junior World champion and 2011 Junior World bronze medalist for Russia.

Nurasulov scored an early four-point move on Gwiazdowski to take a lead, but the American battled back to score a pair of takedowns and earn a point on the shot clock for a hard-fought win.

This was a semifinal match in the league, and Gwiazdowski’s team, KSV Ispringen, was defeated by Germania Weingarten, 9-5. KSV Ispringen did not advance to the finals, meaning Gwiazdowski’s season with the DRL is now completed.

KSV Ispringen had four wins in the 10-match dual meet. Among the winners was 2018 Greco-Roman World champion Peter Bacsi of Hungary, who won his Greco 87 kg bout. The other winners for KSV Ispringen were Arsen Harutyunyan of Armenia (freestyle 63 kg) and Maksim Safarian of Russia (Greco-Roman 97 kg).

Gwiazdowski won four matches against talented wrestlers from across the world in this popular professional league, which attracts some of the top athletes in wrestling each year. It has been a number of years since an American has competed in the German professional league, and was a very positive experience for Gwiazdowski.

“It was an awesome experience. I am thankful for the people that connected me to this team. Getting outside the U.S. and experiencing different competitions, places and competitors is fun. It was challenging in many ways, but that’s what this sport and life is about,” said Gwiazdowski after his victory this evening.

Gwiazdowski started this week at the Freestyle National Team Training Camp in Colorado Springs, Colo., flew to Germany for this match, and will return to Colorado for the final workouts with his U.S. teammates. His next focus will be on the winter tour schedule and preparing for the major events in the 2019 season.
