When it comes to girls wrestling in the United States, California has been on the cutting edge for a long time. The Golden State currently has the most girl high school wrestling athletes with 5,286 in the 2017-18 year, and the most USA Wrestling female members with 3,587 in 2017-18.
California was also the fourth state to have an official girls state high school championships, kicking off the CIF State Championships in 2011. Prior to that, the state had official sectional championships for girls wrestling for a number of years.
The quality of the wrestling has always been exceptional, as California has been the most dominant state in USA Wrestling age-group girls competitions, winning the team titles in Fargo at both the Junior and Cadet (16U) levels for many years. In addition, the National Girls High School Rankings are stacked with California athletes, as girls from the state are ranked in every weight class, and many are ranked among the top spots.
The 2019 CIF California Girls State High School Championships was held alongside the boys state tournament at the Rebobank Arena in Bakersfield this year, a big step forward in showcasing the great talent among the girls in the state. A total of 448 girls qualified to compete this year.
In the 14 weight classes, the gold-medal finals featured at least one nationally ranked wrestler in all but one weight class (106 pounds) and that will change in the next ranking. In nine of the weight classes, both of the finalists held national rankings.
There was a unique battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the nation at 131 pounds. Cheyenne Bowman of Rowland High School, who was ranked No. 1 nationally at 138 pounds, competed at 131 pounds in the post season. She pinned No. 2 nationally ranked Mary Lopez of Liberty High School in the finals in 5:44. Bowman won the states as a freshman down at 126 pounds last year.
Another national No. 1 was able to win again this year, senior Tavi Heidelberg of McClatchy High School, who beat Cristina Santoyo of Monroe High, who is nationally ranked No. 4, by a 10-1 decision. This is the second straight year Heidelberg won the states at 235 pounds.
Not every national No. 1 was able to win the California states this year. At 137 pounds, Dalia Garabay of Freedom High School, who is ranked No. 5 in the nation, defeated Aine Drury of Westminster High School, who had a No. 1 ranking at 132 pounds and competed at 137 for the state series. Garibay pinned Drury in 4:56.
Alia Abushi of Arroyo High School, who was No. 9 in the last national ranking at 164 pounds, won the 170-pound state title with a 2-1 decision over No. 1 ranked Adelina Parra of San Fernando High School, who was ranked at 180 pounds.
Then there was Jerzie Estrada of Birmingham High School, who won the 2018 state meet for Selma High at 150 pounds. Estrada , nationally ranked No. 1 at 144 pounds, entered at 160 pounds this year, and placed third. Estrada was beaten in the semifinals by Yelena Makoyed of Bella Vista High School, who is nationally ranked No. 5 at 164 pounds, by a 5-0 margin. Makoyed went on to win the state title.
Many people are excited about two freshmen who won state titles this year, No. 3 nationally ranked Amit Elor of College Park High School at 150 pounds, and No. 6 nationally ranked Cristelle Rodriguez of Buchanan High School at 101 pounds.
Elor pinned No. 18 nationally ranked Maddie Konopka of La Costa Canyon High School in 29 seconds in the finals. Rodriguez scored a 6-0 finals victory over No. 18 ranked Sofia Martinez of Ayala High School in her finals match.
Four nationally ranked girls placed in the top five at 116 pounds. No. 10 Monica Garcia of Norte Vista was the champion, with No. 13 Desinee Lopez of Folsom in second. No. 14 Charlotte Kouyoumtjian of Monache was third and No. 18 Alisha Narvaez of Arroyo was fifth. Taking fourth was unranked Rebecca Drown of Norco, who will for sure be considered moving forward.
The other individual champions were Leah Gaitan of Yucaipa High School (106), Jennifer Soto of Orland High School (111), Adriana Lopez of Upper Lake High School (121), Cindy Zepeda of Palm Springs High School (126), Lilian Freitas of Pitman High School (143) and Folashade Akinola of Menlo Atherton High School (189).
USA Wrestling congratulates all of the participants in the CIF California state championships. We want to also congratulate the thousands of girls wrestling in state-level tournaments this winter, and look forward to telling their stories. We will post an update on all of the girls state tournaments results, official and unofficial, in a few weeks when the tournaments conclude.
