TALLINN, Estonia – Peyton Omania (Concord, Calif./Michigan State/CYC) will battle for a bronze medal at 67 kg/147 lbs. at Junior World Wrestling Championships on Sunday night.
In the semifinals on Saturday evening, Omania was defeated by 2016 Cadet World champion and 2019 European Junior champion Giorgi Shotadze of Georgia, 7-0.
Shotadze was able to keep Omania’s explosive offense at bay throughout the match, while finding openings for his scores. After scoring a takedown, receiving a point on a passivity call against Omania, then scoring on a gut wrench, Shotadze led 5-0 at the break. In the second period, he scored another takedown off a missed Omania headlock attempt to close out the scoring.
Omania will move on to a bronze-medal match on Sunday, against an opponent to be determined in the Sunday morning repechage rounds.
Omania had a memorable Saturday morning session. Drawn into a pigtail match, Omania won four matches convincingly to reach the semifinals. His first three wins were by technical fall, over Jaewon Lee of Korea, Ignazio Sanfilippo of Italy and Saurabh Saurabh of India. In the quarterfinals, he frustrated 2016 Cadet World silver medalist Mohammed Reza Mokhtari of Iran, 7-3.
Stanford redshirt freshman Tyler Eischens (Anoka, Minn./Stanford/California RTC) will not be eligible for repechage at 72 kg/158 lbs.
The athlete who beat Eischens in the second round, Ihor Bychkov of Ukraine, had advanced to the semifinals, but was beaten in a technical fall by Sergei Stepanov of Russia. Eischens needed Bychkov to make the finals in order to be pulled back into repechage.
Three other U.S. wrestlers who entered today had already been eliminated from the possibility of repechage during the morning session: Mason Hartshorn (Antioch, Calif./NMU-OTS) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Zachary Braunagel (O’Fallon, Ill./Illinois RTC) at 82 kg/180.5 lbs. and Nicholas Boykin (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids/OTC) at 97 kg/213 lbs.:
Omania will be the only U.S. wrestler competing on Sunday. The repechage begins at 4:00 p.m., with the medal match finals at 6:00 p.m. in Tallinn, which is seven hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone.
All of the action is live on Trackwrestling.
