USA Wrestling is pleased to present the inaugural 2018 Werner Holzer Cup to the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, recognizing a Senior-level wrestling club for excellence, based upon the performances of its athletes during a specific year.
The late Werner Holzer, who passed away in October 2018, is a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, and one of the most influential leaders in USA Wrestling history. He was one of the founders of the U.S. Wrestling Federation, which later became USA Wrestling and served as on its Board for decades.
Holzer was also a pioneer in the development of wrestling clubs in our nation. He was a founder, fundraiser, athlete and coach for the world-respected Mayor Daley Youth Foundation in Chicago. He was also the founder of the U.S. Federation of Wrestling Clubs, an important group within the USA Wrestling structure. Holzer supported all of the Olympic styles of wrestling, helping develop national, continental, World and Olympic medalists for the USA.
As an athlete, Werner Holzer was fourth in freestyle at the 1966 World Championships and sixth in Greco-Roman at the 1968 Olympic Games, one of the few U.S. athletes to reach a high level of international achievement in both styles.
In the spirit of Werner Holzer’s vision, this award includes Senior athlete performance in the three Olympic events in wrestling (men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle, Greco-Roman).
The winning club was determined by a point system, counting the specific results of club members in major competition.
Achievements in three levels of competition were recognized:
1. Olympic/World Championships top 10 placement
2. Qualifying for the Senior National Team (top three in each weight based upon Trials process)
3. All-American status (top 8) at the U.S. Senior Open
The results from the 2018 Senior season have been calculated. The Werner Holzer Cup is being given to one club which scored the most points combined in the three Senior divisions.
In order to encourage friendly competition between clubs, USA Wrestling will name an overall top five clubs for the Werner Holzer Cup, as well as a top five in each of the three divisions.
