Coleman, Martinez, Roberts get draws for World Championships in Budapest

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Three U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers received their draws for the World Wrestling Championships. Competition in their weight classes begin on Friday at the Papp Laszlo Arena.


2012 Olympian Ellis Coleman (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) opens the World Championships at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. against 2014 World bronze medalist Edgardas Venckaitis of Lithuania.


Also in his half-bracket are 2016 Olympic champion Ismael Borrero Molina of Cuba, two-time World champion and three-time World finalist Han-Soo Ryu of Korea, 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Shmagi Bolkvadze of Georgia, and Karen Aslanyan of Armenia, who was fifth in the 2017 World Championships.


On the side opposite from Coleman is 2016 Olympic champion and three-time Olympian Davor Stefanek of Serbia.


Coleman competed in the 2012 London Olympic Games, and will wrestle in his third Senior World Championships, after appearances in the 2013 and 2017 World meets. He was second in the 2014 Pan American Championships A four-time U.S. Open champion, Coleman has also been second in the World Team Trials two times. Coleman won Junior World bronze medals in both 2010 and 2011.


A native of Oak Park Ill., Coleman was an athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Site at Northern Michigan before becoming a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete. He is now a member of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program.


Competing in his third Senior World Championships is Patrick Martinez (Colorado Springs, Colo. /New York AC/OTC), who starts his competition at 87 kg/191 lbs. against 2013 World bronze medalist Viktor Lorincz of Hungary.


Also in Martinez’ half-bracket are 2017 World champion Metehan Basar of Turkey, 2017 World silver medalist Denis Kudla of Germany, 2015 World silver medalist Rustam Assakalov of Uzbekistan, 2017 World bronze medalist Roberti Kobliashvili of Georgia and 2018 Russian National champion Bekhan Ozdoev.


On the opposite side away from Martinez ar 2016 Olympic silver medalist and 2014 World bronze medalist Zhan Beleniuk of Ukraine, 2017 World silver medalist Radzik Kuliev of Belarus and 2017 World bronze medalist Hossein Ahmad Nouri of Iran.


Martinez made previous World Championships appearances in 2015 and 2016. He won a bronze medal at the 2016 Pan American Championships. Martinez has won medals in international events in Finland, Spain, Poland, Croatia Russia and the United States. A 2016 U.S. Open champion, he also won a University Nationals title in 2016.


A native of Temecula, Calif., Martinez was a two-time NCAA qualifier for Wyoming, and also a two-time Div. II All-American at Nebraska-Kearney. He is a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete.

At 60 kg/132 lbs., Dalton Roberts (Fowlerville, Mich./New York AC/USOEC) opens his first Senior World Championships against 2016 Junior World silver medalist Etienne Kinsinger of Germany.


Also in Roberts’ half-bracket is 2018 Pan American champion is Luis Orta Sanchez of Cuba.


In the half-bracket opposite from Roberts are 2013 World champion Ivo Angelov of Bulgaria, 2016 Olympic silver medalist Shinobu Ota of Japan, 2017 World bronze medalist Kim Seung-Hak of Korea and 2018 European champion Sergey Emelin of Russia.


Although this is Roberts’ first Senior World appearance, he has competed on two U.S. Junior World Teams (2015 and 2016), a U23 World Team (2017) and a U.S. Cadet World Team (2012). He won a silver medal at the 2018 German Grand Prix in preparation for the Worlds in Budapest. Roberts has won international medals in Finland, Cuba, Germany, Panama and the United States. A 2018 U.S. Open champion, he was also a Junior Nationals champion in high school.


A native of Fowlerville, Mich., Roberts is a member of the Greco-Roman team at the Northern Michigan University - U.S. Olympic Training Site in Marquette.
